I bought the Sony HDR-HC3 this past spring and its great. It is a mini DV high def camcorder. I got it from onecall.com. Much cheaper than Crutchfield and no tax.
I did alot of research before i got it. Go to this site and if it doesnt help you i dont think anyone can

I've enjoyed my Canon GL-2 over the years, but it's not quite basic and not quite professional, but close. Most camcorders that are 3CCD should give you the quality that you need unless you are looking to go Hi-Def.

Skip the mini-DV and go with a Hard-Drive camera. They work more consistently, and the ease of file transfers is amazing compared to mini-DV. I like the hard drive cameras for outdoor use for a variety of reasons. No tapes to mess with when hiking/climbing. Are a little more resistant to sand and dirt (don't ask how I know what sand does to mini-DV cameras ). Also with the hard drive cameras, you can soft the files easily on the camera and makes it easy to go back and watch a particular seen if you are wanting to show someone.

JVC has a nice 3-CCD hard drive camera.

It's a little late but I couldn't be happier with my Sony from a year or two ago.
