Computer Problem/ Paying for It

Hey guys... Weird story but wanted to get your input. I have a dell labtop that is about two years old now that was in like brand new condition with the covering still on some parts. Well this weekend my friends were over like normal before the bar to pregame and the one girl a friend spilled her drink all over my labtop and fried it. Me being a college student and really not having much money needs a new one. The girl took blame for it and said she pay. Is it bad I am making her pay the $1400 for a new labtop for me??? I paid like $1450 for my old one that price includes a $250 discount.
I feel bad making her pay because she has been one my good friends but I do not have the money and everyone knows that drinks are not to be allowed by my computer. The girl is rich so that somewhat shows how she can pay for it as mommy and daddy will for her. She making me take it to a computer tech to make sure its totally broken. I had the whole labtop open and there is burn marks on the board and the guy at the store looked at it quickly tonight and also thought it was. Any input would be appriciated...

man thats a tough call, maybe try to find a lightly used one, since yours was still 2yrs old or w.e maybe try to get one for more like 1,000. That is one hell of a tough spot tho, or maybe just get 1400 from her, then using it on buying the latest and greatest.

btw im a poor college student too.

Yeah it sucks being a college student. My labtop was in great shape, only thing done to it was having the harddrive replaced a year ago by dell because of it being bad... The labtop was perfect shape, so its like I have match it... So its weird for me...

Saw the post on her being hot, she is but has a man, plus kind of to much needs girls.... I did price out this labtop being the cheaper one then the one I bought two years ago..

Yeah. If she is hot hit the computer lab and let her "work off" the damage over the rest of your college stay. If she is a big girl make her buy ya a new one

EDIT:
OK I posted right after you, so she has a man and she is rich...
Still tough call, I never make my friends pay for anything they break. The way I view it is what is a friendship worth? To me a true good friend cant have a price tag. But if she was a true friend she would insist on paying.

If she lives with her parents or is a student away at college.

You could file a liability claim with her parents homeowner's insurance and the insurance co. would pay for it. Assuming her parents own a home and have liability insurance on their homeowner's policy.

It would be covered under the physical damage to property of others coverage.

She lives up here at college at an apartment, so it wont be covered under her parents.. She says she will pay for it because it was her fault but, I heard from my other friend that her parents said they just pay for it. I feel bad making her but I have like no money due to all my bills of living at college, truck payments, insurance, cell phone bill, and just little stuff. She pretty much has a paid ride through her parents....

If she offered to pick up the tab for a new one, leave her do it. She obviously knows she was at fault, and is willing to accept responsibility for her actions/accident.

I don't think a friendship would be broken over this, if it is, there wasn't much there to begin with.

Now on a side note, not meaning to be harsh, but after reading this thread. I find it hard to believe you have gotten to college. You really need to work on spelling and in trying to read this, much of it make very little sense, or at the very least is difficult to comprehend.

Surely you can find a good computer for less than $1000. I would try and find something in the less than $1000 range. It should be as good or better than what you previously had and it will seem like you are trying to help her out while she is doing the same for you. Just because her parents have the money, it doesn't necessarily mean that you should take advantage of her or of that fact.

She is a student away from home in college. Most HO policies extend to cover a dependent living away from home in school. Worth a shot if parents won't pay for it.

Thanks will check up on this.... Sorry about my grammar, I have been in and out all night due to working on things for school with my lesson plans. Sorry for the mistakes as I am not reading over anything and I am just quickly writing while talking to people at the same time....

Several factors in play......

as said

Is she hot?
Is she single?

Then
How good of friends are you?

Regardless of above, worse case scenario, she should not have to pay your cost.......... You can probably order 3 times the computer than what ever you might have had, brand new from Dell for 1/2 that cost now. If it hadnt happened and you were to sell tha tcomputer as it was, you would have likely gotten $300-$500 tops for it.

Your screwing your "friend"..... She did not destroy a 2 year old computer worth $1400.

If she would have wrecked your truck, then would you make her "or the insurance company" pay what it cost to buy a brand new truck, or even what you paid for it? or just replacement cost to buy one of teh same year, same trim, similar miles?

Well...

Legally she is probably only responsible for its depreciated value...a couple hundred bucks.

And according to some jurisdictions you could be partially negligent for leaving it out knowing people were coming over. It is a laptop after all.

If you accept or expect $1400...yea you're being a jerk.

If it is 2 years old you can get a better laptop for $700 from best buy (ask Craz3d ). If it were me I'd ask her to split the replacement costs of a basic laptop and be done with it.

If you asked me for $1400 I'd tell you to sue me...no way would I pay that much.

Just my .02

Good lord, odds are unless it was a 32oz slurpee you only need to replace the keyboard. Maybe $100 and a do-it-yourself job.

Over the course of my career I've dumped about a pot of coffee on various laptops. Been through many keyboards. Take it to a real laptop repair place, preferrably a factory-authorized one.

Hey now, I can't help it.

I never went to college. So I am an idiot, and being one I don't like to think while I read. I want things to be explained, so I don't have to think.

I really should be working.
