Maybe longest in Iraq, a Canadian sniper had one in Afghanistan...somewhere to the tune of 2300meters

Nice I shot a deer at 1300 ft with a 30 dollar scope dropped it dead in its tracks. Now I dont have to worry about that roadside deer bomb

Bah, I laugh at your puny snipers. I shot someone 4,000 nautical miles away.

Well hell- with a scope- I can shoot a gnat out of a plate of grits at 4,000 meters.

Scopes = p***y.

Impress me by shooting someone at that range, with iron sights.

Anyhoo- I'm going to call luck on that anyway. That rifle (if it's the one pictured) is a dressed-down M-16, with a scope on it. While a round from an M-16 (A1 / A2) can travel that far, the maximum effective range is 400 meters (1,200 feet) at point targets (which is what that guys was) and 800M at area targets (human wave coming at you, so you cut down whatever you hit). To hit a target at 1,250 METERS (4.062 feet) effectively triple the effective range of the rifle, and that round...

I'm not gonna call it skill on two counts.

1.) Out of effective target range for that rifle.
2.) Used a scope.

I'll call it a damn-good, lucky shot.

Hooah!

Bighersh,

That's an M24 firing .308 rounds. The M16 fires .223 rounds if I'm not mistaken. The effective range is just a little bit more than 400 meters with that puppy; and, nobody hits targets 3/4 of a mile away without a scope.

Except Chuck Norris of course.

1250m with a .308 is gnarly. I think the Army advertises a max effective range of 800m with the M24 and M118LR special ball; that was an awesome shot. That bullet was probably subsonic by the time it reached the target too, further reducing its chances of a hit. Awesome.

The iron sighting systems that'd be employed to make an accurate shot at that distance wouldn't be rugged enough to survive a combat environment. Iron sights at 1000 yards isn't impossible, but it's not easy either.

Anyone who thinks scopes are for pussies, well, put your money where your mouth is and make a shot like that with an iron sighted .308 rifle. There aren't many people that could do that with a scope, let alone irons. That was an incredible shot, regardless of the caliber or sighting system used. To say anything less because "he used a scope" is ignorant.

Hersh you are setting a pretty lofty goal there. The guy shot someone 3/4 mile a way, with only half his body visable. Yet because he used a scope it was a luck shot?? If it was his first and only kill then I would concede it was a lucky shot but, "The insurgent was one of between 55 and 65 he estimates that he has shot dead in less than five months." To have well over 50 kills with one confirmed at that range, I would say the guy is damn good. Even if he uses a scope.
