Component Audio Hookup question

Ok gang got a question.

I just bought a HD TV and it is coming in a few days.

I have an HDMI cable for the cable box or DVD haven't decided.

Here is my question...

For the second hookup I'm going to use component video as I understand it to be the best. However, it doesn't carry audio signals. What type of audio cable should I purchase to carry the signal. I've seen 5 cable hookups with a component combined with RCA for audio. Like this:

Is that the best option? If not which should I use.

Thanks

Depends on your sound setup. If you only have a left/right channel setup that cable in the pic is just fine. If you are running a 5.1 or 7.1 surround setup you obviously need a digital run... either coax or fiber. That will depend on what you have open on your audio reciever. Mmmmmkay?

Well I guess...

I'll be back in a minute.

I'm looking at the Sony Dream center or some crap as a simulated surround sound system for a few hunderd bucks.

I'll look at the hookups and be right back...

Hope you'll be on cause I know you are good at this crap.\

Here is the TV

Here is the DVD/Sound system...

Haven't bought the sound system yet...just considering that one

Yeah, I'm sure that sound setup is dog chit but hey, if it sounds good to you get it. Use the HDMI for one, use either a digital coaxial cable or optical for the other (that system has both). Just buy a component cable set without the two channel sound. Enjoy.

EDIT: Or get the component cable w/ audio to run from the cable box to the TV, so if you wish you can use the TV only and get sound without having to use the stereo setup... trust me, you'll like that option. YEah, do that. So your shopping list should be that cable in your OP, a HDMI and one coax and one optical digital cable. Enjoy that.

You think that sound system/DVD is junk?

If you got options I'm open. I've never heard the thing I'm just looking for something relatively simple and inexpensive. Doesn't have to be amazing.

Say $600 or less.

It's a Sony & it simulates surround. Sony makes decent stuff, but anything that has less than 6 speakers and tries to emulate it can't be good. Also take my statement with a grain of salt, I'm a huge audio guy and have picky ears. Thus my statement of if you like it get it. The only advice I can give is to go listen to it and if your ears find it satisfactory then get it.

I'm sleepy and got a long couple days ahead of me... peace out!

The toslink that I am talking about and the digital optical cable the Dzervit is talking about are the same thing.

Check at Circuit City or similar store and ask for their recommendations on surround sound. Some of the simulated surround sound that I have heard (Bose 123) are pretty good if you don't want to have to go through the hassle of wiring your home for full surround sound. I am sure that the Sony that you are looking at would be great for movies, but it might not be the greatest thing available.

Like Dzervit said, as long as you are happy that is all that matters. Don't forget to set a budget and try your best to stick with it. You can easily spend a ton of money on audio alone.

Well I'll check around...

I can't go in Circuit City.

We have an uh...understanding.

I don't go in their stores, they won't call the police, and I wont rip the store manager across the register.

Long story...

Sounds like an interesting story.

Looks like you are getting a nice TV. You will love it. I just made the dive into HD recently and it really makes watching your favorite shows much better.
