Mozilla Thunderbird setup help
I'm a complete and total idiot when it comes to setting any E-mail client up. I put my addresses in, it tries to connect and always ends up saying "Connection timed out" or something like that. The different terminology is confusing too, SMTP, POP, ABC, DEF, etc. I'm gonna work on it more when I get home from work, but anyone got a quick primer on the who's and why's to make Thunderbird work? I've got two E-mail accounts I want to access with it, one at Bellsouth.net and the other is a GMail account.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
I can help with that, Quintin. Give me a couple minutes.
EDIT:
Okay, Goto "Tools", then "Account Settings". Click "Add Account", make sure that "E-mail Account" is selected and hit "Next". Enter your name and the e-mail address and click "Next". Enter your incoming mail server (should be mail.bellsouth.net or mail.gmail.com), and make sure the box next to "Use Global Inbox (store mail in Local Folders)" is UN-checked. This makes each mail account have it's own level. Click "Next". Then enter your info that comes before the @ symbol. Click "Next". Name each account (BellSouth Mail or G-mail), then click "Next. Verify all the info, then click "Finish".
After you enter both accounts, there are a couple things to mention, so I'll let ya do it first, then we can chat.

It works, it works! Well, sorta. My Bellsouth settings work, but when I try retrieving mail from GMail, a box pops up that says "An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server mail.google.com responded:" with an "Okay" button to click. And I did go into the GMail settings and enabled POP access on all mail.

MT, thanks for the link, the answer was in there. I had to enable SSL and use my full GMail log in name. Everything's working like a champ now. Thanks everyone.
Maybe I spoke too soon. Now I'm trying to send E-mail from work, and whoever I send it to, it says:
"An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: relaying mail to (for example) gmail.com is not allowed. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again."

^^^ is right. If you try to send mail from your gmail account, via the bellsouth.net outgoing server, that's a no-go, and vice versa. In your compose mail box, you should be able to select with account you're using, and that should clear up the outgoing server issue.
Okay, tried that, still the same. In the "From" box, it has my name, and I can click on it and switch between my Bellsouth and Gmail accounts, and neither will send mail to a dummy AOL account I have. They do have a web filtering service installed at work though, could that have something to do with it?
If you goto Tools->Account Settings->Outgoing Mail Server, what do you see in the box on the upper right? Do you see two smtp.xxxxxxx.xxx things listed? Next, try highlighting each one, and then clicking "Edit". What is the Security settings set to? I'd try changing them to each one, and then sending a message after each change. Do this for both mail servers.
Yeah, sometimes the stuff at places like that disallow the sending of messages. I guess they know that you're actually trying to send out virii instead of actual messages.

P.S.-Any luck on the tire situation?
