My dad had a 2004 F-250, 5.4 (260hp), 3.73, 4X4. He got rid of it since it was a total underpowered POS. He is 66 and drives like an old man (read: slow). In 2 years of ownership, he never, ever, ever got better than 12mpg & usually got about 10.5mpg. That dropped to 9.5mpg when towing a trailer.
The EPA does not require the manufacturers to rate the mileage for 3/4 & up vehicles. If they did, all the vehicle sold to constuction companies and fleets and such would count against the CAFE average that the companies must meet. I believe it's currently at 21mpg average for all trucks & 27 for cars.
Unless you want to hate your vehicle, don't even consider a 5.4 in a F-250. It's not powerful enough in a F-150 let alone a truck that weighs in at 6800lbs.

I've been on leave for the last 2 weeks. I went to NC again. I'm almost certain that's where I'm moving when I retire, most likely to the Charlotte area.
I'm supposed to go on a kickass trip in 2 weeks. It goes to China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia & a few other locations.

The 6.0 diesel will get you 16 - 18 MPG highway with a HEAVY foot, running 70 - 80, althought I did see 90 a few times. That was in a crew cab 4x4 with a topper. 13 MPG towing a 22' boat, heavy foot again.
F-350 Crew cab dually short bed 4x2 with a V-10 got us 11 - 12 MPG mixed, there was also a time when it had a few thousand pounds of rock in the back...
F-250 4x4 V-10 Ext Cab long bed with 3.73s would get about 14 - 15 highway.
As for the 5.4, in Expedition form it's getting 13 MPG, so I'd expect even worse in a bigger truck.

The "heavy-duty" trucks are exempt from the EPA mileage tests so you won't find any official numbers.
Owner reports of V10 mileage can be found here. From what I've read, the 5.4L owners are getting about the same as the V10. I'd be surprised if the PSD truly gets more than 2-3 MPG better than the V10.

I don't mind paying the $5000 or $6000 extra for the diesel engine but I have a major problem paying that much for the fuel. When I use to pay 35 cents a gallon for gas diesel was only 25 cents a gallon. How did this swing the other way? I guess I'll have to test drive the 5.4 gas engine to see if I like it. I haven't seen any V10s. If I don't like the 5.4 I guess I'll have to consider looking at other makes.

If you do decide to go with the Diesel engines, ether get an 03 (7.3L Turbo Diesel) or get an 05+. 04 was the first year ford came out with the 6.0L and they had some major fuel delivery problems that year. A friend of mine ended up trading in his 04 for an 05 because he constantly had it in the shop. Just my 2 cents...
