I'm more worried about kids in high performance rides than cops. At least the police officers get some training.

To the OP believe me when I say not only to the officer's have the required training, they have the time behind the wheel in actual chase situations to perform the job safely. You might be able to out run an officer, but once you do it once you will most likely do it again and sooner or later you will get crashed.

Plano Police Department has them, as does Collin County Sheriff's department.

I saw a flat bed with three of them on the back of it, headed south on 75.

They were all white, and only had the light bar on top, no other badges or markings. DPS troopers are driving F-150's and Rams.

This is still my favorite police car, especially in Texas DPS colors. (I liked the old Camaro even more)

PS, the OLD Chevy Camaro would run 170 - 180 in Police package trim, a Lightning is no match for a police car.
And, if the "RT" is a police car, I'm sure it has at a minimum the 345 HP Hemi in it, or maybe even the 425 SRT-8 engine. Police cars, unless the municipality is low on $$, do not have the base model cars.

Great -- now not only do I have to be paranoid about every Crown Victoria I see coming up behind me, but also of every Charger!

Gotta' say though -- those black & white Charger Patrol Cars look pretty sharp!

Heck, in Plano you have to be leary of many things.

Tahoes, Rangers, Crown Vic's, Impala's, F-150 (Haven't seen it in a while, but it was out there), Chargers. I must admit, the Impala is pretty sweet- I sw one light up a Jag one night. Seeing all those lights come on, from out of no where, and damn-near a close encounter.

Lights on the dash, the rear deck, on the exterior mirrors, in the grille...
The only thing that gives it away in the day time, is to see it from the side, with those "hub caps" that only cover the lugs, and the lights mounted on the mirrors (but you have to be within 30 feet to see those).

I have seen them over correct on the landing and cut the tail boom off when the blades flex. It is very easy to screw it up and thats why I was suprised they actually landed. They are probably one of the very few units in the country that do that. I am in EMS and we no longer let them land. 3 times in the last year we chopped 3 tail booms off and that is a ton of money. Keep in mind that is just strictly designed to save your life, so chopping a tail boom off is really not that bad considering what you are accomplishing...

[QUOTE=X150] I'm not exactly comfortable having a police officer driving a vehicle with comparable performance to our Lightnings (at least stock).[QUOTE]

Why

[QUOTE]We've spent our time around these cars, we know what they are capable of. And most of us know what our own limits are. [QUOTE]

But people will still push beyond their limits

[QUOTE]But given a Dodge Charger, will we see more cops taking more risks to run down some nutcase ricer, which could possibly lead to avoidable accidents?[QUOTE]

All departments have pursuit policies, personally 90% of the pursuits I've been in have ended up in the idiot who is running from me crashing, if they get too wild I'll drop back and wait for the carnage when he wraps himself around a light pole, happens with idiots on motorcycles almost everytime. The pursuit is usually "terminated" by the driver wrecking not the police officer on most occasions

[QUOTE]It seems like bringing in Chargers and Magnums to their car fleet is almost in response to the vast array of high end performance modders, like us. But do they have the necessary training and experiance to drive these cars? The Chargers aren't the old whale like Crown Vics or the deceptively-slow Impala.[QUOTE]

The main reason your seeing the Chargers now is that they are currently the only ones that are going to be offering an interceptor package, Ford has backed out of this market. And yes training will be given, if you had any idea how much training I get every year you'd be stunned.

[QUOTE]Anyone else worried about this? Will cops start cracking down harder on the modders driving the occassional 5-10 over, just to prove they have the horsepower?[QUOTE]

Worried about what? Enforcing the law?

The township I work for has 3 of them so far. Their department is a mixed fleet of vic's, expy's and now chargers. They currently have 3, 2 undercover and 1 black and white. The 2 undercover have the R/T package and are as stealth as I have ever seen. One is silver and the other is like a greenish color. All clear LED lighting, even regular Pennsylvania plates! The black and white already has some damage done to it due to some "high speed pursuits". From what I have hear they officers like the Charger due to more leg room and overall comfort. I havent heard which is better performance wise, although I am guessing the Charger would win.

However IMHO you just cant beat the look of a black and white crown vic, exploding as tank or not!

regards,

I am very concerned about the Charger being used by law enforcement.
Have you noticed the roof line?
The back doors are so small I just know I'm going to crack my head wide open.

Just the thought of it is enough to make me go straight.

Sure.

That'll happen.

That's the word we are getting also.

The track and the range are the two training requirements that I would do for free if I had to. Way to much fun.

There has been many different police cars on the road for years. In the late '80s I got pulled over by a Buick Grand National.

We don't want them to pull us over for speeding but we want them to rid our cities and towne of drug dealers and gang bangers. We want them to take our spouse to jail when they are abusive. We want them to be there right away if we are involved in an accident.

They are law enforcement. There are laws on how fast we can opperate our vehicles, they are just enforcing them. "They" are people just like the rest of us, that happened to be employed at a job that enforces laws.

I think that Chargers will make cool police cars.
