Texas won't have Tarell Brown for Saturday's showdown with top-ranked Ohio State. AUSTIN – Texas coach Mack Brown on Tuesday suspended starting cornerback Tarell Brown and backup linebacker Tyrell Gatewood for Saturday's game against top-ranked Ohio State.
Brown was arrested and charged early Monday on misdemeanor drug and weapon charges. Gatewood and former Longhorn linebacker Aaron Harris were charged with misdemeanor drug possession in the same incident.
Tarell Brown was expected to line up on star Ohio State receiver Ted Ginn Jr. in the slot.
Mack Brown said he looked at four issues before suspending the players.
"As a head coach, No. 1 you have to look at the legal system and cooperate with the authorities completely," Brown said. "No. 2, you must go through the university because that's who we work for. No. 3, you are concerned about distractions for your football team. We want to move forward because it's No. 1 playing No. 2 and it's such an exciting game for all of us. No. 4, you care about the three young men involved and their families. We will try to help the families individually and move forward with our team for the ballgame on Saturday."
Brown would not say if the suspensions would be only one game. But he said the outcome of Saturday's game will not be decided because Texas suspended two players.
"We've got good players and good oaches and we will be ready to play," he said.
According to the Travis County Sheriff's Office, Brown was booked into the Travis County Jail at 4:55 a.m. Monday along with Gatewood and Harris. Brown and Harris attended North Mesquite High School. Gatewood is from Tyler Chapel Hill.
Brown was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Brown, Gatewood and Harris were charged with possession of two ounces or less of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.
Jamie Balagia, the attorney for Brown and Gatewood, said Monday that the gun belonged to Gatewood and said that neither Gatewood nor Brown smoked the marijuana found in the car.
Acording to sheriff's records, Harris was driving northbound on I-35 near downtown Austin just before 3 a.m. when authorities pulled him over for swerving from lane to lane and changing lanes without a signal.
Harris passed field sobriety tests but admitted that he had been smoking marijuana and told police there was "some" in the car, according to sheriff's records. Brown and Gatewood were asleep in the car, but Brown had a loaded 9 mm pistol in his possession, according to sheriff's records.
Authorities located a "blunt" marijuana cigarette weighing 1.1 ounces under the front seat of the car, according to authorities. Authorities also found another .7 ounces of marijuana in Harris' front pocket, according to sheriff's records.
Balagia said the car belonged to Gatewood and that Gatewood had legally purchased the gun.
"That's his gun," Balagia said. "He had taken it to the shooting range and forgot he had it in the car. It slid out from under the driver's seat, and Tarell picked it up and put in his lap. Then he fell asleep."
Balagia said Brown and Gatewood took drug tests for Texas on Monday to prove they were not smoking marijuana. Balagia said he hopes to get the results back quickly.
"They don't engage in that kind of activity," Balagia said. "That was something Aaron Harris is taking full credit for."
