Gas guzzler taxes

If this jerk from Massachusetts has his way you will be paying a good chunk more for your F150. He wants light trucks to pay a gas guzzler tax.

I don't think you understand how this tax works.

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS.

The fuel economy figures used to determine the Gas Guzzler Tax are different from the fuel economy values provided on this web site and in the Fuel Economy Guide. The tax does not depend on your actual on-the-road mpg, which may be more or less than the EPA published value. The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars).

If certain passenger cars are forced to pay this tax, then I think it is only fair that light trucks pay their share also.

Trucks used for heavy duty purposes should be exempt. Face it, many people buy trucks now for purposes other than just work. This tax is from 1978 and is almost 30 years old.

And if you look at the vehicles affected, you will see names like, Bentley, Aston martin, BMW, and Mercedes. vehicles with price tags that those who buy them can easily afford. Yes, a lot of pickups and SUVs are bought by people who don't really need them, however with them price of gas, they will eventually shake out. Most PU's are bought by people who use them and may not be able to afford that tax. the tax is prorated to the mpg. Smallest amount paid if you hit the categories is $1,300. Highest amount paid is $7,700, Our trucks would probably fall into the $3,700 to $5,400 range.
Also my feeling about this is it is being done to collect more taxes and no other reason. He's ticked that all these PU's and SUV's are out there and he isn't collecting any money off them.

And this is surprising coming from the state that unleashes the likes of Ted Kennedy and John Kerry on the rest of the country?
