Questions about cicadas . . .
Questions about cicadas . . .
We don't really have them in Lost Angeles, but when I'm back on the Right Coast I hear them a lot, especially at night. Today I heard mentioned that they appear every 17 years. The Hell??? I've heard them every summer since I started going back 5 years ago. What's up with the 17 year thing? And are they predominately on the east coast? How about the mid-west? Anyone on the left coast have them? It's seems y'all have them in massive numbers out there back east. Them puppies are deafining at night!!!! Occasionally I hear them on the golf course here but nothing like back east.
And has anyone here eaten them?!?!?! I just read an article about restaurants in D.C. serving them as delicacies (evidently the soft shell is very tasty).
YUCK.

We have them out here in the desert. The 17 year cycle is supposedly "per family." In other words, you hear them every year, but its different groups of them. One group of cicadas makes noise every 17 years, but they're constantly overlapping. Make sense?
Cicadas......YUCK.......they are so damn ugly. Actually, there is a 17 year cicada that remains dormant for that time and then comes out of the ground. You don't want to be here for that...it is disgusting. Happened here about 10 years or so. Here's some info.:

a few species of them....many every 17 years, others around 10-13, and if I recall, some are every year.
Here in Ohio, we just had our cicada mania just a couple years back I think. The ones here have red eyes. When I lived in Alabama, they were all dark green and black with black eyes.

This is what they looked like here in Ohio:

I guess these are called annual cicadas for a reason:

Just read up on them at Wikipedia (is there anything that's NOT on that site?!?!?!).
Evidently there is one species that lives for 17 years (most live 2 to 5) and most of those 17 years are dormant underground and when they surface then the overall cicada presence increases dramatically, but all species are always around.
The last two years in Princeton they seemed to me to be extra loud. Really loud. Deafeningly loud!!!!! (I don't remember them being that loud in my youth).
Anyway, I had never heard the 17 year thing before. The things you learn. Today I learned about landlines and the 17 year cicada (and that "outside of" thing).
As for them being a delicacy . . . no thanks. I don't care if they really do taste like chicken (in case they do). If I want the taste of chicken, I'll eat chicken.

"I HAVE cicadas"????
I bet the doctor can clear that right up if you get it treated early enough... there's treatment you know... it's nothing to be ashamed of... everyone has a rough 'night or two' at some point... treatment is simple and painless I hear.

Short Hills. Nice. I could live there, cicadas be damned. The Mall at Short Hills is just like those at home. It has everything. Guess there really is life outside Los Angeles. (Had to pause not to type "of").
