Digital Camera Questions
Thinking to get one and take truck pictures and for general use.
I see some 3 mega pixel cameras for under $100. Is that enough resolution for messing around type pictures?
Is it really worth 70% more $ to get a 4 mega pixel camera?

It depends how you store the picture file. Because 4mega pixel consumes more bytes if store on PC hardisk. but if your looking for refinement of the picture, the Higher pixel is the best. Good luck and wait to see your truck photos.

Hey Franko.
I'm sorda in the same boat. My digital camera took a nose dive about 2 weeks ago. I wish I was "smart" enough to fix it, but I'll just buy a new one.
I dont know didley squat about digital cameras as far as mega pixels and such, but I did get a chance to play with a really nice one my buddy has here at work.
It's a Kodak P850.
I found a few sites that sell it for about $250. Not to bad for what it has to offer:
I wouldnt research the megapixel so much as just the overall quality of the pictures it takes
I have a Canon Powershot SD550 and I love it. Runs $300.
I know for a fact the SD450 is just about as good and runs cheaper

The mega pixel is just hype, it's basically a marketing strategy.
Do not get caught up in the MP false marketing.
The MP rating of a camera really does not tell you anything about the camera or the pictures that it wil take. SO there is not enough info to answer either of your questions at this time.
Even the same brand camera, one being a 3 mp and second a 4 mp, did they raise the DPI (Dot Per Inch), or did they expand the image size for the extra MP? Did one or the other; or both need to be expanded for your needs?
If you'll do a search on this site there are several good threads with lots of good info on digital cameras.

I just re enforced that you would not be disapointed with the one you choose.

Dont worry Dr. Franko, every penny I've spent of Brew's, he's spent of mine too. He dont know it yet but he is getting ready to spend about fifteen thousand dollars of mine. Funny thing is I can't wait!

Hello! maybe you are miss interpreting the MP and DPI? DPI is for your printer quality and MP is the amount of pixel in one photo. I might challange you to take a shot on same object with 3MP and 4MP, then save to your pc. Then check their file size, and also zoom as closer as you can get for both then you will learn what MP means. And try to print them on the same printer with the same DPI settings you will see which one will be refine. If you cannot see the difference print the zoom (the same zoom setting) then you will found out.
3 Mega-pixel is fine for most folks.
Unless you plan on printing large photos, you don't need more.
What is very important is lens glass quality. Canon makes the best lenses.
Get a camera that uses AA batteries, not a proprietary battery.
If you already have a memory card, get a camera that uses the same card. If not, then the Compact Flash is a good choice.
A lens cover is a plus as is an articulating screen.
Any of the Canon "A" Series cameras will serve you for many years.

MP are important but unless you are doing professional photography or printing huge photos 3 is more than enough.
Pay more attention to stuff like who makes the lenses, zoom (not digital that's crap), speed, etc.
I've been very happy with my Fuji.

Lens is the most important. Depends on what you are using it for, but if it is family/kids, get the biggest zoom [optical {lens actually zooms}, not digital {the computer "zooms"}} you can.
If you can stay with the same card format great, but with the price dropping all the time, it should not be a major concern. 3.1mp is usually good enough for standard 4x6 prints, and I have done 5x7 with a 3.1. At that size, they are about the same as an film camera. If you are going to spend time cropping and using the computer to fix things, then a 5mp or so would be your best bet. I personally would give up mp for lens size.
Be warned though, these things can be as bad as our trucks: I started out with a little cheap 1mp camera and am now up to a DSLR with a bunch of lenses.

PS: Try www.dpreview.com also; Good info, but these guys are even more **** than F150 owners...
