Question about Paint
Question about Paint
I have a friend at work that has a 2006 Acura TL and the paint is coming off in spots on teh hood roof and trunk. The dealership is saying that it is his fault. So I'm looking for so input. The car is less the a year old and only has 5000 miles on it. He took it in recently to have it detailed and the spots were not there nor did they say anything about sap or bird crap. Now that he has brought the spots to the dealerships attention they are saying it is from sap or bird crap. Dont they have to cover the paint since it is not from rock chips or something hitting the car?
Any help would be great.

jdoggfx4,
You would think that it would be covered under the warrenty. You should have your friend go back to the dealership at a different time in the day and see if he/she can talk to a different person. Usually when I do not get my way, I will wait a bit and try to talk with another service person or manager.

Yeah yeah, But I'm fixing to leave the office for the day and wanted a quick response (related to the topic)
But thanks for your wonderfull wisdom!!!!
my understanding is that Honda paint tends to be on the thin side.
Your friend needs to go to some Honda boards and find out how widespread this is.
Then he/she will have some ammo at the dealer.

Try a different dealer.
edit: I see now that the spots showed up after the detail? Dealer probably won't work with you on that. Hit up the detail shop.

tell him to go under the car and loosen one of the hoses carrying engine oil so that it slowly drains out. Then just tell him to drive until the engine seizes and he can claim the hose was improperly installed at the factory at which point the manufacturers warranty will get the whole car replaced.
make sure it is a slow leak so it doesn't look like he did it

I really haven't seen bird poo or sap of any 'paint removing' caliber in that peroid of time. Sure, it can stain the paint and even work it's way into the clear causing it to get that 'shattered' look but, not cause it to flake off.
My suggestion, have your buddy get a 'high end' body shop to give it a look and give him an opinion. First, find out if it appears to be a respray (which is my hunch). Second, ask them their opinion on how it could've happened and if they're seeing paint flaking off a body panel because of very short term bird poo contamination (...obviously, being that it's brand spanking new, he's probably taking VERY good care of it -- most people who care enough to have it detailed and/or spend the bucks on a luxury car tend to take care of things -- especially when new). Once he's armed with this type of info, he has a better case to throw at the stealership which sounds like they're covering their ****...
Then again, who knows, maybe your buddy is a doof and has done something to cause it... probably not though. Body flex (unlikely) and other little things like that can cause paint to separate from a painted panel but, again, VERY unlikely with an 06'.
I have to call BS on the dealership. Something is up. My hunch is that it was poor prep work by the shop that did a respray on it after it came off the truck with some scratches or a ding. I'm not a betting man but, if I was, my money would be on this spot on the board.
G'luck!!

Get some pictures of this damage. Depending on where it's located, we all may be able to rule out the detailer who did the car... this, however, is still a possibility in my opinion.
