The one that got away...
The one that got away...
No, not the girl who you still think about every now and then, that you let get away due to timing, distance, other interests, etc.. I mean the car/truck/SUV you let get away because you weren't diligent, patient, or didn't press hard enough.
In writing a post a few minutes ago about the day I test drove several high-end cars back-to-back-to-back (The best way to do it, and remain objective), and reading posts about timing, and Acura discounting their vehicles big-time, I was reminded of the one that got away from me.
The year was 2000, the month was October, and I was a newly promoted manager, with a rather nice annual salary increase... "It's time to upgrade".
So, I was flipping through Sunday's paper, and I saw Crest Infiniti was marking down Infiniti Q45's (My favorite car) from an MSRP of $51,000 down to $36,000- a $15,000 discount!!!"
At the same time, I was also considering the new Oldsmobile Aurora (Even though I thought I'd never buy another GM), and the Ford Expedition. Crest Infiniti was the only dealership I had ever heard of, who was open on Sunday's (But they're closed on Saturday, in observance of local "blue laws")
Consequently, being the habitual procrastinator I am, I waited until Friday of that week (got off work early) to go see, deal pending on the similarly priced Expedition. Sure enough, they had two Pearl-White Q45t's on the lot that Friday. I was on the lot when I got a call from my cousin, who was about 4-hours early arriving from San Antonio. They were on 75, about 10 miles from me, and needed directions to the house. Therefore, I had to leave to meet them at my house, but planned to come back... I didn't.
Well, there was a bunch of Q's on the Lot, and a few "Q45 t's" I didn't think I was in danger of missing out.
We went to my cousins game the next day (Saturday), and when they left on Sunday, I beat-feet back up to Crest. When I arrived, one of the two Arctic White Q45's was gone, but the other was still there. I parked, and went inside. My salesman came out, and we got ready to go through the motions of buying a vehicle. I wanted to test-drive it- so he went looking for the keys, meanwhile I went outside to look at what was surely about to become "My car".
As I approached, I saw a red sign laying on the dash. As I got closer, I could read the letters on the sign, SOLD.
DAMN!!!
So, with white gone (This was my favorite color back then, I hadn't been exposed to black yet), I asked about a black one. (Zero). Silver (uh-uh). Any Q-45t's? (Nope).
Damn!
OK, can you do a dealer search? (Sure)
Great.
There's no more 2000 model Q45t's available in the USA. We thought we had one in Illinois, but it's unavailable...
DAMN!
OK, what kind of deals are you guys doing on the 2001 Q-45t's? None, MSRP = $51,000.00.
DAMN.... Damn, damn, damn...
Having missed my would-be Q45, due to procrastination, I ended up getting the Expedition-, which I loved...
Even though I loved the 2000 Expedition, I will always remember, the one that got away!

My buddy and I found a 67 Shelby in a field. We bought it, towed it to my little hobby wrecking yard and went to work on it. It was all there except someone had swithed a 427 Hi Riser with a 4 speed for the original 428 CJ automatic. We rebuilt it and took turns driving it. I would take it to the track occasionaly. I never felt comfortable with joint ownership of anything, just not the way I am made, so I made him an offer to buy him out for what we had in it, or sell to him for the same price. He bought me out. He still has it and has been offered 5 times what we had in it.

I let a house get away because I didnt want to gamble with a bridge loan.
No cars really... I have the mustang and pickup that I always wanted.
Well other than my father's 78 F-250
Well, I had a brillant blue '79 Nova that I let go when I joined the Marine Corps. That was one bad **** sumbish too. I out ran a many corvettes in it. I bought it like it was. I didnt do anything to it, except maintenance. The interior had been completely restored, new wiring through out, and a new stereo system (which I changed). It had a 350 / 350 turbo / and it would run.
I sold it to a buddy I went to high school with and he told me he would take good care of it. I was going to buy a new vechicle once I was at my first duty station, but still would like to see the car last like I would have kept it.
This ***-muncher had the car ragged out by the time I was done with boot camp (3 months). The last I heard, he sold it to another friend of mine and the block was cracked. It still ran, but you know...like crap.
I'd love to still have that car to this day, and if I would have kept it for myself, it'd still be on the road.

Guy was asking $2300, and that was only 2 years ago. Then a few months ago, there was a white 1999 F-350, ext cab short bed, 2wd,
Powerstroke
6 spd. I had almost everything lined up (was trying to figure out what to do with the F-150), when somebody came in and bought it.
66 FORD FAIRLANE BEAUTIFUL RED.
Had been restored as a 50 year annivers present in 1986 to my grand mother from my grand father. She had it since new...
I was 19, she passed away suddenly and Pops was selling everything so he could move into an apartment. He asked me if I wanted it and I said no because I was still grieving pretty hard over her dying, plus i was in the navy and really had no where to put. Well that was in 1988 and Today I kick my self in the rear all the time. Now I wish I had that car to remind me of her.
