I guess it's all relative.
I guess I have to admit a prejudice here. When asked about firearms and pistols in particular I tend to rate them in terms of reliability. With rare exception given to the uniqueness of a particular firearm or it's intended roll as a plinker only, I judge them by the following criteria; can I trust my life to it? If yes buy it, if not leave it.

I know not everyone thinks this way, but that's how I am. Yes I'd recommend a Ruger MkII, but most people would not keep it around for CCW purposes.

the gun is junk, what will you do when the firing pin or extractor breaks. are parts available???? the HI- points i have recovered durring arrestes all of them had some type of problem.
ie.. card game gone bad, guy pulls a Hi-piont puts it in the face of the other player pulls trigger, nothing, racks the slide ejecting a live round, again puts it in the face of other player, pulls trigger, nothing. third person at table stabs the guy with the gun. problem broken firing pin, can it happen to a beretta, s&w, colt, yes, but the odds of are way lower than the $100 HI-point.
cheaply made, POS

like Quintin said, for plinking and going down the river, the Hi-point will do. now if you ever use it for personal defense then i would say, heck no, buy a reliable gun because all you have is a $100 hammer.

at least your using and having some fun with a gun using your 2A rights.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to call BULLSHYTE! on your little scenario there.

They are cheap guns, I'll grant you that. And they look like a blob of plastic, I'll grant you that as well. You can't hit the broad side of a barn, Granted. But, they don't jam, as far as I have ever seen.

I don't personally own one but my brother owns a 9mm and a big@ss clunker 45ACP. We have shot many rounds and his guns, as far as I have seen, have never jammed up.They feel like crap in your hand and they aren't really accurate. But if you want a handgun that will work a majority of the time that is dirt cheap, then Hi-Point is the one.

You probably wouldn't want to go out and put 20,000 rounds through it and expect it to be as reliable as a Glock. But if you want to keep it in your truck or beside your bed, I don't personally see anything wrong with it.

I personally have a Glock 9mm in my truck and a Smith and Wesson .44 Mag beside my bed. But I do have a problem with people saying something is crap unless they have tried it. I have a Taurus 9mm that I paid $300 for that broke after I had shot about 100 rounds through it. It has a lifetime warranty so I sent it to Taurus and got it fixed. So theoretically, my brother's Hi-Point is better than mine because his has never broken. Also, my Glock has jammed twice in all the years I have had it. His has never jammed. So his Hi-Point is better than my Glock. See my point?

All guns at somepoint will fail. Some fail sooner than others no matter what the quality.

I carried one in the floor board of my trucks for years, especially when traveling, even before CCW laws. They are a very good, accurate, reliable, yet rather inexpensive gun and still a cheap gun to shoot, plus easy "it's like pointing your finger" to shoot.

Stopping power... maybe not, but I can pump 2 rounds in the attackers loins, then if still advancing, the other 8 into his head aiming for his eyeball (wich would be easily done from the hip with these guns). Atleast buy me some time to get away.

Thanks for the info guys. I carry a springfield xd. I saw this gun and thought it might be nice to have so something that you wouldn't mind falling in the mud or getting roughed up. I wouldn't want to put my nice through all that.

My guns are either or. If I shoot it then it will get dropped in the mud, river or what ever. When I buy a nice, then it is mounted in a glass display case with humidity control and never even shot.
But it has to be a collectors relic, or a historic relic of some kind in order to to get the not to shoot status.

If you're ever in a situation where you need to shoot an attacker shoot to kill. That way you'll only be sued by the attackers family and not the attacker and quite likely the DA for poking holes in the poor defenseless person who was only coming to get directions to the local mission so he could volunteer his time.

Sad state of affairs but that's how it is these days.

I wouldn't expect a kill from a .22, obviosly I've never tried to take someone down with one, but have shot small to medium game with them and know it's not as easy. It's my favorite round for game, but if they limp off, then I just get to hunt for them some more.

On an atacker then I'd fully expect to have to break thier neck after I got them down.

I know two people who have them....and I've shot them both before. They are very unbalanced guns and heavy. When I was shopping for a 9, I wanted something not real pricy, but I didn't really want one of those. Especially when I handled some other guns. They haven't really had any problems, or mis fires, but like what they say"you get what you pay for."

I ended up buying a S&W SW9VE for $280 with an extra mag. It was one of the SW reps demo's so it had been shot before but came with the same warranty as new and was like $60 cheaper. Its a nice gun for the money, and its basicly just a home defense gun for me, but its fun to play around with at the range.

just gotta throw a plug out, if you're looking for an inexpensive but not cheap gun look into a makarov in 9x18. Dead reliable and you can get them in new condition for less than 200

You plan on dropping your weapon when you shoot it??? Get a lanyard, some resin...anything...but don't drop it..

I have a HI Point 40 cal and it is what you pay for. Like someone said it is fairly heavy and not super acurate. I have pushed better than 2 thousand rounds through it with very little trouble. I wouldnt want it as my only weapon but for a starter it isnt real bad.
It of course in no way compares to my Kimbers, but they cost 7 or 8 times what I paid for the Hi Point.

Sled...
