how many wheels?

OK, time for a really dumb question.

When Ford (or anyone else) uses the designation 4X2, what exactly do they mean?

I understand 2WD and 4WD, and always knew 4X4 meant 4 drivable wheels as opposed to the regular rear wheel drive 2WD. Then there' s FX4. Any good explanations anywhere on the web?

Barry
(just a 2WD rear wheel drive kinda guy)

4x2 = 4 total wheels x driven by 2 wheels
4x4 = 4 total wheels x driven by 4 wheels (switch on)
fx4 = Four by 4, ie 4x4 = 4 total wheels x driven by 4 wheels (switch on)
awd = All wheel drive = 4x4 = 4 total wheels x driven by 4 wheels (all the time)

OK, thanks. I understand designating how many wheels are being driven. But what's the thinking in the first digit? Do they have to tell people they are getting 4 wheels on the truck? Was there ever an option?

Maybe they should add "with a motor" as well ?

I thought there was something more profound there, but apparently not.

I'm going to write to Kawasaki and suggest they market their bikes as 2X1's. After all the "big" car guys do it that way.

Thanks guys for refraining from using my question as dumb-a$$ed ?? of the day (so far, anyways).

Barry

Dude that is such a stupid question! Why would you even bother typing that and hitting the submit button?!

While the Z71 package on Chevy is now a trim package, it used to be an upgraded 4x4, think Z28 or Z06. The FX4 was an upgrade to the Ford 4x4, until the 2004 model year where it is now merely a trim package. And you guys don't tell me the skid plates are really all that functional!

The fancy Z71 and FX4 are merely status symbols and try to convey the shortcoming or lack thereof of the owners manhood. Real men buy XLT!

*off to dream about driving a FX4*

Yeah, but if you did a little checking I'll bet they only sell 4x2 Jeeps out there in... that... place.

80% of the time I appreciate my open diffs.
15% of the time I wish I had Detroit Lockers
4% of the time I wish the open diffs spyder gears were welded together (AKA No slip diffs. )
1% of the time I wish I had welded spyders and tank tracks!

2 years with out 4wd and I have yet to miss it on a daily driver.

I believe it came from military designations for vehicles. Wheeled vehicles are designated by the number of wheels and how many are powered. 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, etc.

FX4 is a trim package offered by Ford. Real F-150 owners buy said package and laugh at guys who buy XLT's and Lariats

A buddy of mine used to harass me 'cause I had a 4x4 Scab Lariat. Then I waded ol' Larry into some sand and drug his FX4 SCrew out....

He doesn't make comments about my Lariat anymore
