need some router help please
OK, heres the story.
I get home today and my internet is not working. I call my isp and they get my internet back up by bypassing the router. They tell me that they cannot support my router since it isn't theirs. So, now I need to know how to get the router to work again. It is a linksys WRT54GS. I called their tech support and waited 20 minutes and hung up.
Any ideas??
thanks

That is a great router BTW.....
First what did they do?
Did they have you try to reboot the router, or just by pass it from the word go to test? Then when it worked told you they can't help.

First; Shut off everything... Computer, switches, router, cable modem... Then turn on cable modem and wait for it to get signal, Turn on router and count to 30, then boot CPU. If that doesnt work, then:
Take a paperclip and reset the router via the little hole on the back. You might need to hold it down. Then do everything above. Hope this helps.

Good advice but personally I would just try a power off on the cable modem and router first and then reboot the computer.
The paper clip trick will reset your router back to factory. If you haven't changed anything in it great otherwise you'll need to reconfigure your settings

I would also try to turn off the router, cable modem and computer. Plug the router into the cable modem and then the computer back into the router. Then power up in this order.
1. Plug in the cable modem. Wait until all the lights are on.
2. Plug in the router. Wait for the lights.
3. Boot up your computer.
Have you hooked the router back up to your computer and tried to access the settings page? That would tell you if you can communicate with it at all. I have a Netgear router and I can open IE and type in http://192.168.0.1/ and then put in my user name and password to see all of my settings.
Also, are all of the lights blinking on it that should be? I had a router just go bad and the #1 port light would not light up. That is the port hooked into my computer.
Good luck.

yea definatly dont want to master reset unless you have to, and then only after you've insured that you have your settings saved on you HD some where from a working state.
Other wise you have to go thru and change everything back manually.....

A light out can be a bad cable, bad nit card, bad port. If it's just one port down then that helps diagnosis and indicates the whole router probably isn't bad.

assuming everything is hooked up correctly
go to a command prompt (start->run->cmd)
and type
ping 192.168.1.1
and see if you get 4 time outs or 4 replies
4 replies is what you want....next try
ping 209.73.186.238 (a yahoo server)
if that works than try
ping www.yahoo.com
If #1 fails you have a basic connectivity or software firewall problem
If #2 fails you are good to the router but bad to the net....go into the web settings and release and renew the router's IP
If#3 fails you have a DNS problem.

who is your ISP?
What Modem are you using?
what else is on the network?
Was the router all default settings when it was working?
Also...
from left to right what lights do you see on when the router is hooked up and everything turned on?
Are you able to get into the router via http (internet explorer)?

bellsouth
westell
nothing now
I think something was changed a while back but i dont remember what
power, wlan, 2, internet
I havent tried to get into the router yet
1 of 2 ways
Manually enter DNS info in the router
Manually enter DNS info in your TCPIP settings of your NIC card
In your web page setup for you router
go to your status "tab" and click dhcp release and renew and see if the primary and secondary DNS fills in with numbers.
Try #3 again.
The easier fix albeit it a little of a workaround.
Go to your control panel (start settings control panel)
Network Connections
Local Area Network connection
Properties
Double click TCPIP
select use the following DNS servers and fill in two DNS servers
you should try to use your ISP ones but you can use 63.226.12.96 to get you through until you find one.
