Yet another stupid computer ????
My laptop, has XP on it, and I used to be able to turn it on and in a few minutes it would be ready to go. It really slowed when I installed Norton Internet Security. But anyhow, the windows deal update the other evening and now when I turn it on, it comes to a screen that I have to click on, it says user or something, then it goes through the few minutes to fire up so it can be used.
I didn't have that screen before, unless it hibernated or whatever it does after not being used for however many minutes. Then I would see this screen and click user and I was set.
How can i bypass this logon screen, I searched through the control panel and a few other places, but couldn't find where to change the setting.
thanks
dave

I dunno about the log-in screen, but I know NIS is a huge resource hog. It works pretty well (I guess?), but it takes up a ton of resources which can make things run slower.
My XP laptop started running like molasses at one time. I bought it through Best Buy, so I threw it at the Geek Squad and they found beaucoup loads of spyware. That might be your problem too.

Go into Start; Control Panel; User Accounts. You should only have one usable user account in there. Anymore and it will bring that log-on screen up when you start your computer.
IE: On mine I have my admin account (which i renamed) and a guest account that's off.
And yes, NIS is the cause of the slow bootup...and slow everything else...and soon you wont be able to connect to the internet I'm sure.

I run the ad-aware program weeky usually. It may not be the best thing to use. I just want to do away with that logon screen that just started to pop up. For years it wasn't used. Now it wants to be, I guess.
Tical84's advise will take care of your log in screen.
To speed up performance Go to Start/Run, type prefetch, delete all the files in that folder. Sit back and enjoy the instant turbo for a few weeks.

I was there in the control panel. I had an account named ASP.net It had to have come during the last windows security update, or when I downloaded the LiveLink stuff from the SCT website for my Xcal2.
Thanks for the help.

What is all that stuff in that folder? It really serves no useful purpose?

That's the idea but soon it gets full and actually slows the system waaaay down. Basically all those programs are running on your system using resources even though your not running them. You can safely delete everything in there.
