Why I like working for a small company...

I woke up this morning to my alarm, turned the alarm off, the TV on, and laid there listening to the news for a few minutes. Then I got up, got ready for work, made my lunch, loaded the dish washer, and left with plenty of time. Got to work in good time considering the rain. Traffic was pretty light. I walked into the lobby, checked the clocked 8:59. I made it in just under the... 8:59!!! I'm supposed to be here at 8:00.

So, everyone including my boss (the owner) just laughs and makes fun of me for a good 10 minutes... Now, had this been a large corporation I would probably still be in my managers office getting lectured... When I started here I brought the full timers count up to 6, including the owner...

The only thing I can think of is that I drifted off to sleep without realizing it, while listening to the news for a full hour, so that when I woke up I saw the minutes on the clock and thought nothing of it...

Why I like working at 7:30am.

I woke up 45 minutes late today; similar situation. I got into work a half hour late. It was okay cause nobody else was here yet.

God willing; I will never work in a large company.

If you think that's great, closer9, try working out of a home office. There have been many days when my wife has gotten home from work in the afternoon only to find me at my desk, unshowered, unshaven, and still in my pajamas!

Although, I have to admit that on days like that, when the UPS guy drops something off, I think he must go back to his truck and think about what an unemployed loser I must be!

I have an added bonus -- when the weather is cool, I set my laptop up out on my workbench and get to work outdoors, in my garage, with ol' Blue (my truck) sitting right there beside me! That's why I always say I have the best job in America!

I work for a major building products company and cover 15 states where I inspect projects where there is a problem with the way one of our materials is performing. I have to figure out if it is a manufacturing problem, an installation problem, or an application problem, and then recommend an appropriate field repair. If it's our fault, I also have to negotiate a settlement with the customer.

The beauty of my job is that while sometimes I am busy and traveling, other times I have absolutely nothing to do but hang out and wait for the next fire to pop up. If I had to do this job in an office, it would suck, because you'd just sit there and make busy and stare at the clock. But since I work out of my home, all I have to do is be available by either email or cellphone in case a problem crops up!

The flip side of this is that when there is a problem, you sometimes have to go out of town on a moment's notice. There have been many afternoons when I have been sitting there thinking about what I was going to have for dinner that evening, when the phone rang and the next thing I knew I was headed off to the airport for a flight.

But God I love those days (and sometimes weeks!) when I wake up and can say, "I have absolutely NOTHING to do today!" The wife just glares at me when she heads off to fight the morning commute!

But, at least you have a 401k and can take advantage of the tax savings. Many small companies don't.

I worked for a small company for 8 years. It had <15 employees including the two owners when I started and about 4 employees (1 active owner) when I left. Small companies have advantages and disadvantages. They were so dependent on me that any time off was always a hassle. No matter how much time and effort I put in, it never felt like it was enough or appreciated. Being that it was such a small company, there was never any down time in dealing with the boss and I always felt like I was under a microscope when-ever I did something. I was expected to do a lot of things like bank deposits, picking up supplies, etc. There was no retirement plan, no room for advancement, barely any raises, and only 2 weeks of vacation which were always a hassle to take. For sick time I could take time off but didn't get paid. On the other hand. 2 hour paid lunches at the best Italian restaurants in Northern NJ or Manhattan were the norm. I took off every friday in the summer from Memorial Day to Labor day and met my boss down the shore sometimes where we would hook up with our boats. I pretty much had a lot of control in the office where he wouldn't second guess decisions, and Christmas bonuses were substantial.

I've now been working for a huge corporation for the past 8 years. I get 30 days of paid time off, there is a nice 401K, and it is stable. I am salaried and nobody says anything about coming in a 9 and leaving at 4 if I need to, as long as it doesn't happen all the time. I also get to work from home, which is a big plus since my commute could be 35 min tp 3 hours on any given day. There are a lot of office (and corporate) politics that I can't take. You can't change procedures without getting "Congress" involved. Between the pressure making month end numbers and the office politics, I am ready to leave.

I am in Engineering.

What for??

And I'm not Mr. Mom. No kids to look after, only the Dog, who is now learning to ride on the quad, in preparation for learning to ride on the Road King.
