Smartphone Apps

I snared a Motorola Q over the weekend and now I'm searching for apps and other 'tweaks' that I can enjoy with this new device.

It runs Win Mobile 5.0 -- any suggestions? Thoughts? Apps that you love and use ALL the time on your SmartPhone? Any great free-ware apps? Great app sites?

All help is GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks guys and gals!

So far, I LOVE IT. I've had it in hand for two days now...

The major flaw -- no pocket Word or Pocket Excel (could care less about PPT). There is a viewer but, no editing. The viewer is very easy to use. I'm not super-keen on Verizon's wireless email sync but, that's something I can live with...

This is my first Smartphone or PDA device -- I swore I'd never get one. LOL. Now I'm too connected.

bubba -- thanks man! I hadn't found that site. www.qusers.com isn't bad but, not frequented much...

Again, thanks for the link! So far, I love my Q!

Verizon store in my local Circuit City... Said they've sold 8 of them...They show it on the website too...

Honestly, it's a really impressive phone -- the graphics are excellent.

First MAJOR con has been noted for the Q... and it was probably user error...

Microsoft's ActiveSync software ate *ALL* of my Outlook contacts with the exception of 8 (mind you, there were around 300 contacts). Not sure why those 8 survived the mass delete but, they're there.

Luckily, I backed up Outlook about a month ago onto our fileserver at the office -- the problem, I'm not at the office and don't have remote access. Oh well, I'll snag them this weekend when I'm there.

I'm not sure how I did it -- or if the software did it -- but, none the less, it's a bummer.

Still loving this phone... I'm tinkering with some 3rd Party apps at this point. None have blown me away but, I'm still searching... my 2gb mini-SD card should be here Friday.

Here is what I have installed on my Cingular 8125 (i.e. HTC Wizard), disclaimer that since your "Q" has a square display, some of these apps may not be supported yet:

1) PocketWeather - great, low-cost, full-feature weather application that will show you multiple locations on your Today screen

2) TomTom Navigation 5 w/Bluetooth - now I have a fully functional GPS system on the phone, for far less than a single purpose device...have used it several times already (I get lost a lot)

3) Magic Button - this one is a must-have. WM5 has the annoying habit of not actually closing programs, rather it minimizes them and runs them in the background, eating up precious memory. This app actually closes the application! (and, it's free!)

4) Resco Explorer - these two applications just make it easier to make changes to the registry and find files on the device

5) Wine Guide - what can I say? My Wife and I like wine...and for the $20 this app costs, it provides a lot of functionality...and we like having it available when we go to store so we can review and record our selections real-time

6) TrafficEdge - still experiementing with this one, it provides an interface to the various traffic camera websites out there from municipalities around the country

7) FlexMail 2006 - still experimenting with this one because it is pricey, but it looks like a much more powerful alternative to Pocket Outlook, almost provides the complete desktop Outlook functionality with advanced syncing. I've taken two trips in the past three weeks w/o the laptop and it has worked pretty well at keeping me connected

8) Pocket Screen Capture - freeware and relatively simple screen capture utility

I am still awaiting support for Google Maps for my device because I like the concept. I've also run across a bunch of people that love WiFiFoFum for locating hotspots and Wi-Fi Companion for managing WiFi connections.

Oh, and if you happen to be a Sirius user, there is a cool (and free) application that lets you stream to your Smartphone. More information can be found over on this site.

I find http://www.howardforums.com to be an extremely useful resource for product reviews...

Hope that helps!

Thanks for those links Steve... I've been a member of Howard for over a year I believe -- just don't post much. That's a great site with a lot of REALLY sharp mobile users/hackers.

In lieu of not having google maps support yet, you might check out Virtual Earth. Honestly, as a guy that has to use maps daily with my profession, I wasn't overly pleased but, it did have some nice features. The aerial photograph feature is pretty handy but, you can't really get in tight and the photos take a bit of time to down - even on EVDO.

I got the Sirius program to work for about 5 minutes before it locked up my Q and won't work now... still trying to figure that one out. Very cool app -- when it was working.

Another cool little app Steve and others.... PDAnet... this program turns your smartphone into a dialup modem. So, when tethered with your laptop (btw, bluetooth is available too rather than a tether if your lappy is BT or if you have a compatible dongle) you can surf! Obviously, with a BT signal, you're totally wireless. Very very slick...although, I can't seem to get the BT to work with my Kingsinton (sp) dongle... I'll figure it out though. LOL!

A one time fee of $34 has you covered. PDAnet from June Fabrics PDA Group.
