Wookie..honestly it's not all that hard to do. You just have to be patient and do it RIGHT. You will need some special tools I believe, to get the carrier out. I'll look at the manual tomorrow and let you know whats inolved.

Ewww, you must have hit that thing hard!

Well I ordered the impeller repair kit for mine, hopefully I ordered the right one, it's supose to be in tomarrow, then hopefully that will take care of the over heating. I'm getting ready to check on some things for the dieing problem. Hopefully I'll beable to take it back out tomarrow night and have a good trouble free run.

Gotta love boat ownership.....

No problems here. Yet. Except for the fact that I don't think it's hitting WOT, but that's a simple adjustment.

Some boats, wont. If you get one hang on to it. They are rare. I know one Bayliner that went 6 years and only problem ever was a trim silenoid. They Traded for a bigger, faster boat and then ownership really came in question. Who owns who here? Do I own it, or does it own me?

Since I have to tear the lower unit apart what else should I plan on changing? I figure the seals and oil are a given. What about the bearings, would it be worth it? Are there any other items that I should plan on changing?

If I remember correctly the impellor for the water cooling is in the top of the lower unit. If it is original, I would definitely replace it it.

Yes it is, that is suppose to be changed every 3 years. I just got my kit in and picked it up after work. Going to change it in a few minutes.

I should probably replace mine then... :o
My brother needs to replace his, it hasn't been replaced in, oh, 40 years It's a 1966 Merc 9.8, and it looks like it has less than 20 hrs on it, and I don't think the impellor has ever been changed.

Mine had been changed a couple years before I got the boat, had only been used 3 times since it was changed before I bought it last season.
Brew said that sitting is harder on them than using them. I should have changed mine last year lucky it made it the whole season. He told me and others agreed that while sitting they take the shape of the housing and quit pumping water.
Mine looked fine, but I changed it anyway since I was in there. I'll beable to let you know wednesday if it's all fixed or not.... crossed fingers. I think so.... I hope so.
