With talk about us NorthEast guys getting a meet together to go to an offroad park and camping, I am now on a quest for a new tent. I used to camp alot and I mean alot....when I was younger, but havent been in a while. So tell me what I need to look for in a good tent these days. I guess a 3 - 4 man tent is fine, nothing real crazy expensive or anything like that. I was also considering the tent that goes in the bed of the truck, but I cant seem to find one that says it will fit my bed ( Supercab 6.5' ) Anyone have any experience with these? So tell me, whats the good the bad and the ugly about tents....

Not up on what's good. We got a larger tent from Sams Club last year wich is nice, but rather large. I think it's 10x12. Was a good deal though. Wally World has a decent selection if you're looking for budget stuff. Unless you're looking for a sub zero tent or something like that any run of the mill tent should work. Just check out how the doors and windows zip up if you can. Sometimes they have wierd arrangements, expecially with the doors and screens for the doors. If you get something for the truck bed see if you can find a big piece of foam 8-12 inches thick (I had one that was 12) and cut it to fit your bed with the tailgate up. You can stack all your stuff on top of it then throw it in the tent when you get it set up. Makes for real comfy sleeping.

 

Brew - next time you go up to CT, swing by Campmoor on Rte 17 in Paramus - wide variety of tents/gear to select from & the staff is pretty good. (or you can join us next weekend as we go camping on the USS Massachusetts in Fall River, MA with our Cub Scout pack....sleeping in the old Navy bunks something like 6 stacked. )

 

Make sure it's a dome tent... other than that.. everything else is just bells and whistles.

I'm not even close to being an expert, but we do go camping at least a couple times a summer.

Don't cheap out. That's what we've done and if it rains there is water in the tent. Seal the seams.

Maybe if your somewhat close to here, I'll have to see if I can go to the get together. I don't think I'd be up to off roading, I dont think my truck would do so well, but if you could bring some of your beer.... JK, It would be cool to meet a fellow F150onliner, who brews beer.

I've always like Coleman tents and gear. Which ever tent you do decide to go with, I would take the time and apply the seam sealer it should come with.

 

I have spent my fair share camping in tents and I would HIGHLY recommend a tent with a full fly piece that goes over the tent and goes almost to the ground all the way around. It will give you superior protection from rain which is a tenters biggest nemesis.
I don't have a pic of my tent, but it is a 4 man tent, (measures about 8ft square), is a dome shape with a full fly, and the best part is that the full fly extends out over the main door of the tent to provide a small second room kinda place protected from the elements, but with no floor which makes for an excellent place to keep stuff out of sight from thieves and out of the rain.
I wouldn't pay extra for a common name like Coleman (probably made in China anyways), more importantly, compare the stitching at the seams and the material quality (stong and breathable).
Once you settle on one, look into spraying it with some good sealant.

 

Who needs a tent....

You will get drunk and pass out by the camp fire anyways.

 

Well I do my fair share of camping. It's time to get a new tent for 06' and I plan to get whatever they have at Target. No big deal.

Last summer I built my own for the back of my longbed out of PVC pipe and a tarp. I like it but I dont think my current GF would go for that.

Do you have a Costco near you? Out here (CA) they are selling a line of
Wenger (Swiss Army) tents that are pretty good. And cheap. I paid $50
for a 4 man tent last summer.
Also, for car camping, I really would recommend going up one size from what
you think you need. A 4 person tent is really only good for 3... a 6 person
tent will comfortably fit 4, etc.
The advice on getting one with a good rain fly and sealing the seams is very good. Having two doors is also very convienient.

 

if you are driving the truck to the campground... screw it and buy a 10 person tent with a 7' peak.

You wont be sorry you can stand fully erect to put your pants on or have the room to move around.
