Ok guy, I have my first 'real' job interview tomorrow. Ive had some before, but they have all been college jobs and the such. I was talking to my dad about it and while I respect him a great deal seeing that he has been alive a lot longer then me I think he might be kind of old fashioned when it comes to this:

He says I should shave my goatee off. I think he is crazy. Its not like some wild thing. Its very conservative and not very long at all.

Is it a conservative company? Unless your working for a bunch of uptight holy rollers I wouldn't worry about it. However, trim that mo'fo and ensure there is not a single hair out of place nor is it too long. Act professional, remember?

 

When I was going after my first couple of jobs out of school, I shaved the goatee. The last couple of jobs I have gone for, I left the goatee alone. Mine is trimmed neat, and my resume and references speak for themselves. I just accepted a position Friday for a 36% pay increase.

In short, shave for your first 'real' job interviews. You can grow it back after you get the job.

 

Leave the goatee. As long as it looks professional; it won't be a problem. Keep it short and organized. I'm not shaving mine for interviews; I look good with it.

 

Do you believe having it could get you the job? Do you believe having it could have the interviewee pass on you? Appearance is your only first impression isn't it? Why risk it? It will grow back.

 

And on the flip side, if the kid looks good or more mature with it then shaving it could harm him as he looks to 'kiddie' like. Or maybe he's just like UC and I and looks dead sexy with it. Being curtious, professional, confident and knowing WTF your talking about wins over a goat anytime.

 

I shaved mine for the last interview that I had. However, if it is neatly trimmed and close shaved then you could pull it off. A lot of it depends on who you are interviewing with and their personal feelings. The safest way is to use the razor. That for sure will not bother anyone other than yourself. If you do shave it do is several days in advance, so as to hide any tan lines. Having the outline of a goatee would be worse than having one, that is unless yours looks bad. I say that because I have a friend that has one that looks horrible, it makes him look like a 'tard. You don't want that on an interview.

Which leads us back to this is his first job after getting out of school. So he doesn't know WTF is going on. No offense, but what you learn in school doesn't neccesarily (and most of the time doesn't) translate into the workforce. Which is why I shaved mine for the first couple of jobs (when I didn't know WTF was going on) and I haven't shaved for the last couple. I still don't know WTF is going on, but I've learned how to fake it (i.e. - curtious, professional, and confident)!

 

I got an idea... post a before/after pic of your face with/without the goat and we'll vote on it!!!! Or just a before and we can PS out the goat...

 

I know what he looks like withOUT the goat, but not with it.

 

I always looked at what the worst possible situation was and the probability of something happening I can not control. Like a bug crawling it the stache or beard before the interview without me knowing. A little bit of food or a sneeze getting in it. A wisker getting out of place. The way I figured it was I can feel something on my face but not my facial hair so off goes all of the beard and moustache. With that said unless you have a creative design in you goat I don't think there would be a problem having it.

 

Who has your best interest at heart, a bunch of yahoos on a internet truck site, or your dad?

I'm 50 and I think I would only remove it if I went on an interview for a job I wanted really bad.

When I was in my twenties, that was every interview I went on.
