Maaco Comments/Reviews?

Knowing every Maaco franchise might vary a little in quality of work and the professionalism of the service you receive...if any of you have had any experience with getting a car painted at Maaco, please let me know. We've got a 1992 Camaro that was my wife's first car and she's reluctant to sell it. Problem is the paint is totally wasted and it's completely gone on some of the plastic bumper areas. So we're looking at the possibility of just getting it painted since that's the only problem with it (well, the A/C is not working but that's a pretty easy fix).

Price for descent paint job? The color is black.

Thanks!

As to their exact price range, depends on your market. I can tell you as to the quality, if you spend quite a bit you get a decent job. I would do the trim removal yourself and save money there because if you don't and they don't include it they'll spray it all. And sometimes you get lucky and get someone with skill behind the spray gun.

I'd start asking lots of people. Word of mouth is usually vastly superior.
Pay more now, or pay alot more later.

Hope you find what you want.

Oh and I'd go with an actual paint and body man because they will look for the multiple dings and waves that are probably there that you can't see.

Is there a technical college near you, they usually have programs with deep discounts to let your ride be worked on by students (with instruction of course).

It's all in your hands. Do the prep work yourself. If you do good; the paint will do good. IF you don't do a good job; neither will they and it will suck. Make sure to remove anything you dont want to get over-sprayed cause it will. Tape up stuff yourself if you have to.

I friend took his freight truck to a Maaco. They masked off the magnetic door sighn and therefore painted around it. They are a bunch of fools at that franchise.

I thought it was so funny.

I'd bet money that paint didn't last long. Prep like that and you're asking for a short-lived paint scheme.

I painted a whole car Tremclad black, painted over every thing with 24 cans of spray paint and used white, red, and blue electrical tape for racing stripes, I even painted the chrome bumpers....but I had to remove the lights, grill windows, than the LTD went to demolition world..with wedding flowers glued on the wheels....

Prep work is the key and if you have a garage, rent a spray gun and compressor, you will do better than Maco 299.99 paint job they will just mask/paint the car...

Not a bad suggestion. My best friend and I have painted a number of car parts... in fact the tailgate and driver-side bed were done in an airport hanger. I will say, however, your quality will be pretty poor without any practice. Definately find or create a dust free environment if you can. My buddy just did the whole front end of his 82' Tercel and it looks great; his skills definately improve with practice.

Depends on the Maaco you go to. I had a buddy that ran one, and I had several cars painted there (including my 86 GT with 60K miles on it) and I never had any real issues with their paintwork. Another buddy owns a bigtime body shop down here, and even he said that the painters at maaco get good due to volume over time. I usually get the $299 job for the cheap cars, but I paid $925 for a really nice base/clear onthe stang.

Oh; I almost forgot. They use inferior quality paint as well.

As I mentioned above; I've done a bit of auto-painting myself. When I got my supplies at Sherwin Williams Automotive, we asked the owner about Maaco. He told us they carry a special lower quality paint that they sell only to Maaco for the budget jobs.
