Mental note: Next time, go at low tide.

Was probably out of control. Happens sometimes. By the speed it was going that's what it looked like.

If you look close, the bridge is coming down. Looks like the operator started it down too early. After it hit the bridge, he started it back up. Least it looks that way.

I agree with Kingfish51. That bridge was coming down, then started back up after the collision. Unfortunately, the part that collided with the lift-span was I believe the ships' bridge. I don't see how anyone could have survived.

Well it's not like they have water brakes or something.
Only thing you can do is throw it in reverse and hope for the best.
Or toss an anchor and hope that your chain is the right length.
Unfortunatly props are designed to push water back, not forward so in reverse the thrust is not equal to the force needed to stop in a short distance.

They had several tons moving forward, an object in motion wants to stay in motion. Friction must exceed momentum to stop it. Momentom = (speed x Mass).

Yeah, but they open those things way in advance. Grew up 5 minutes from one of those. You can wait a long time before the boat actually passes through.
