Lightning's Beware
Just announced:
The new Mustang Shelby GT500 will have 500 horsepower!! So, be careful out there. That mostly stock-looking 'Stang next to you at the light just might be a sleeper with 500 ponies.

have you even seen the new shelby, its far from stock looking. Cobra badges all over it, most have stripes, the rims, and the giant S H E L B Y across the rear might give it away too.but on another note, badass that ford upped it to 500 ponies, cant wait to see a KB or whipple on one of those

Well, Mic, take a look sometime at most of the stock Mustang GT's and SVT Mustangs out there. You'll see lots of them with the same stripes as the new GT500 (identical hood stripes and very similar side stripes - even the 6 cyl Mustangs have side stripes) plus all stripes on the GT500 are a delete option anyway and, since you haven't noticed, all of the SVT Mustangs are Cobra's with the same badges as the GT500. And wheels, give me a break. One of the first things a 'Stang owner does is change out the rims. Any other differences are so minor that you'll miss them unless you know exactly what to look for. The trunk spoiler is different from the stock GT but many owners have installed the optional wing that looks almost identical to the Shelby part. That leaves the Shelby name on the back of the trunk lid as the only real differentiator.
If it were me ordering a new Shelby coupe, I'd either opt for deleting the stripes altogether or deleting just the side stripes and ordering the dark grey metallic stripes over a black body color. I like the Shelby name on the trunk but other than that, I'd keep it pretty low key.
At the risk of moving this thread even farther away from a Lightning subject, have you seen the new Hertz GT350H Mustang? 325 hp but no manuel tranny, unfortunately. Friend of mine (an automotive writer) is getting one on loan from Ford for several days for a full evualuation and subsequent article. If he gives me a preview, I'll post it here.

well i work at Auto Alliance were we build the Mustangs and i can tell you after seeing literally hundreds of mustangs a day you'll be able to tell the difference between a Shelby GT500 and a regular Mustang gt or v-6 car. although the aftermarket will be swarming w/ body kits and such it'll be hard for the average car nut to mistake a Shelby. have you noticed i'm not refering to it as a cobra? from the large mouth bass looking grilles and the 2 heat extractors on the Shelby specific hood(yes its a unique hood). we start mass producing the Shelby's on 6-05-06, expect between 7500-10,000 GT500's for the 07 model year.
RDY2RAC,
You're right. I forgot about the heat extractors on the hood.
They took a great looking car and made it even better. Would love to have one.
Hopefully, the initial pent-up demand will be satisfied by the time the first six or eight thousand are sold and allow whatever premium the dealer's will tack on to be removed so that ordinary mortals might be able to afford one.
Interesting that by gearing the S/C to blow out just one addiltional pound (9 psi vs. 8) and by installing 4-valve heads in place of the 2-valvers and then retuning, they were able to achieve 120 more crank horsepower (500 - 380) than a stock Lightning out of basically the same 5.4L motor.

I guess since Ford only has "1" Hi-Performance vehicle in it's line up this is good news, (if they dont pull the plug like they have on every other Hi-Perf Vehicle they claimed was coming out). It's def awesome looking
and it surly sounds like it'll have kick *** power
but as usual they're going to play games and not make enough of them, (on purpose), and then on top of that all the dealers will add crazy amounts to the list (thats already plained and worked out) and of course make it out of reach for most.
All in hope everyone ends up buying v-6 stang's instead, since thats all that'll be on the lots.
Some might remember when they first introduced the Shelby ole Chin Fu PROMISED Ford would make as many as people can possibly want, YA RIGHT
Hey at least someone got a good deal
The right to purchase the first 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 was auctioned for $600,000
Baw ha ha ha ha

Well, the new GT500 will blow my doors off but I know I paid a lot less for my Lightning.
The Lightning is old now. There are several vehicles that are as fast or faster. Most of them cost a lot more too.
I will admire them [GT500] as they pass by.

And, that's just the RIGHT to purchase. The auction winner will still have to pony up the MSRP for the GT500.
