Unaltered Star Wars Trilogy Coming to DVD!
Han shoots first again as original theatrical cuts are finally released.
by IGN Staff
May 3, 2006 - In a major surprise that will please many fans, Lucasfilm
has announced that the original, unaltered theatrical versions of theStar Wars Trilogy will be released on DVD this September. For many years now George Lucas had said he would not release the original cuts of the film, but things have clearly changed, with the press release crediting overwhelming fan demand as the reason.
The new releases of each film in the original trilogy will contain both the original cut and the 2004 digitally remastered version of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The set will be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. Attached is the full press release from Lucasfilm:
"Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy.
"In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.
"This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.
"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."
"That's also the day fans will be able to experience the LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game, the action-packed sequel -- filled with tongue-in-cheek humor -- to one of the best selling video games of 2005."

The new ones were average with the last being the best by far but the original 3 were
The opening scene with the star destroyer flying overhead...wow.When Vader first walked in through that cloud, picked that guy up and barked out his orders....I was hooked.
I hated that I couldn't get the originals on DVD now I can...that is great

I can't pay for the same thing twice- but, Yay!
If I had to rank 'em:
Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Oh my goodness. Besides wanting to slap the schit out of Anakin for being so easily swayed, duped, hoodwinked, bamboozled, run amuck, led-astray, by the Emporer's BS; and for, killing younglings, this was a great movie. Lightsaber fights were superb, I had a problem with Anakin dispatching Dooku so quickly- but, if you read the book- you know Palpatine was using the force to slow Dooku down so Anakin could kill him. You'd think Dooku would realize this... Probably not after handing Obi Wan his **** so readily.
Light sabre duels were on point:
Anakin & Obi Wan vs Dooku (Part 2)
Anakin vs Dooku
Obi Wan vs Gen. Grevious
4 Jedi vs Palpatine
Mace Windu vs Darth Sidious
Anakin vs the Jedi Temple (Didn't see it, but read about it. That would've been worth seeing, at least)
Yoda and Obi Wan versus the Storm Troopers (Too short, but good)
Yoda vs Darth Sidious
Obi Wan versus Anakin
Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
Was my favorite, because of the space scenes, but the deal with the Emporer, which seemed to be quite a build up in 1983, is anti-climatic today. Good thing the Emporer wasn't as strong in "Jedi" as he was in "Sith" or Luke would've been dead by the time Vader finally reacted.
Episode V: Empire Strikes Back
Boring (looking through 2006 eyes) once Luke goes to Daegoba. Did OK, but not quite there. Kinda like wearing three kondoms.
Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Count Dooku made the movie; otherwise- "Hey, do you guys want any popcorn?"
Episode IV: Star Wars
Originally- loved it, but it's boring to watch now, (1988 - Present).
Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Anakin wa waaay too young, and not enough Darth Maul/lightsabe er action.

I hope they make lots and lots of copies because those are going to sell like wildfire. . .count me in for a set!!
I have to admit I've only seen 2 of the pre-quels but the originals will always have a special place in my video collection. I have them on VHS and have often wanted to replace them with DVD's. Dear Santa, I want the Star Wars Trilogy for Christmas. . .:santa:

Star Trek is FAR better than Star Wars. George Lucas is a Nut Job who I refuse to give any money too. While I do like the original 3 movies the prequals left me seriousliy disappointed, and Episode 2 was was boring I fell 3 times before I could watch the whole thing

vader Yeah, I'm with ya man. The original movies rocked, the new ones, wel, episode 3 rocked.
