Like I said, this will just be a recreational gun, if I ever had a home invasion situation I would reach for the shotgun first. Just the sound of loading that thing could scare someone off.
Rack the slide on an 870, and you have everyone's attention.

I'm late to the party... I didn't read the whole thread....
It's probably derailed by now..

Granted these are not in the same caliber as yo would like to have, but on a budget it is a lot cheaper and thus more fun to shoot a 22 than a 9mm or a 40 and it will be far easier to learn all of the things you need to learn to be able to hit what you are looking to shoot. Less noise, and recoil, and smoke. The guns I have suggested each will hold 10 rounds so they would be able to be used in the home for defense if needed. 10 rounds from a 22 to the torso or head will slow if not stop an invader.

Everyone wants the bigger calibers to start, and then they find that they aren't all that comfortable to shoot and the cost for ammo, even the imported and surplus stuff is a big drawback, and then you soon stop shooting.

Just my opinion.
This was going to be my suggestion too.
For much the same reasons.
It's not even the comfort of shooting as much as it is the pshycological comfort of setting of a small explosin in the palm of your hand.
Guys going from big bore long guns to hand guns have the same battle.

I bought a S&W 22a for my first "brand new" hand gun. I was not happy with it except for the easy, one button break down. A thousand rounds or so later (aka a couple of days) I decided that I did not like the way it felt, nor the rear blade site... it litterally would cut my forearm constantly while in the holster.
Then I shot my dads Ruger MKII with bull barrel and fell in love. So went and bought one of those.
It and my 10/22 are definatly my most shot firearms. I can buy a brick (500rnds) of cheap .22 remingtons at walmart for less than $20. Yea I have to clean it more often with those, but I'm plinking long after everyone else has ran out of ammo and money. They have already packed up to go home and I'm not even 1/2 way out of shells yet. Becasue of this, with the MK II, I don't even "have" to look at the target when I pull the trigger. As long as I know where it's at... then it's like pointing my finger.

You only have one 10/22!!!

I can't imagine this possible. I must have 6 or 8 of them in different configuration. They are like 1911's and Lays potato chips, you can't have just one.

Any upgrade to it?

I'm with PSS-Mag as well. I have a Ruger MKII Competition Target that has been reworked with a Volquartsen grip and trigger (great trigger). I love that gun and I also own a S&W 629, Kimber Custom Target and GP-100. The Ruger is the first gun I reach for in the cabinet.

On a side note, my carry gun is a new S&W M&P40. Seems solid so far. I carried a Glock 30 for years but grew tired of all the weight of 11 230 grain SXT's. I use 165 grain SXT's now for the 40.

Nothing against the Glock, looked hard at a 22 to replace the 30. I just felt it was time for a change. Love that Ruger though.

I too only have one 10/22. I only wanted one to go prarie dog hunting and the occasional plinking. Upgrades to mine: Spiral Forged Bull Barrell and Bushnell 1.5-4.5 scope.

If I buy another small caliber rimfire rifle I'm going to get a 17m2, 17hmr, or 17 rem mag. Just don't know which yet.

The 10/22 was my first gun. Given to me when I was 8 or 9 years old. I had so much fun plinking with that gun. After over 35 years and ten of thousands of rounds, I gave this gun to my son. It's his favorite (above his Enfield, Mauser, Mosin Nagants and SKS among others) to shoot.

It's completly original with no mods.

yea I currently only have one 10/22, it is completely original, walnut stock, SS barrel, that my great grandpa gave me, the only add on is a SS Bushnell 3-9x42 scope. I will always have atleast one and will always have that one. It is my favorite one that I've had, it was my first. I've had several different ones since then, but currently only have that one. At one time there were 10 different 10/22's in my cabinet. I don't trade as much as I use to and it just landed that I haven't had any more in a while. I definatly don't hesitate about trading for more.
