If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,

From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.

when i was at FT Hood this was almost an anthem when we deployed.

This is indeed a beautiful song, that chokes me up everytime I hear it. However, Lee Greenwood ran to Canada to avoid Vietnam, so this song, when sung by him, will always have a little bit of stigma attatched to it everytime I hear it.

I must apologize to Mr. Greenwood. After some research, I found that I was wrong. (this is only the second time )

"It angers me when I hear this. I never served in the military because I had children at the age of 17. I was given the classification 3A. The draft never got to that #. If it had, like my father, I would have left my wife and children (for I know they would have understood) to fight and die if necessary for my country." - Lee Greenwood

(A 3-A classification was a hardship deferment given to an eligible male if "service would cause hardship upon his family.")

For anyone intrested, here is the whole story: http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/leegreen.htm
