Is it worth it?

I've always been a Ford Truck kind-a-guy and im looking to buy a used F-150 but need some opinions.

It's a 1995 F-150 regular cab, short box, 4X4, 5 speed manual. The truck is extremely nice and the guy put new rollers in it, new bedliner, etc. It has 90K miles. Is it worth buying? I'm afraid that 90K might be too many miles...but you guys are the Ford experts...let me know!

Thanks,
Dave

90,000 Is not alot of miles by todays standards.

The 300-6cyl is a good engine.

Well my problem is I'm only 17 and im trying to convince my dad that 90K really isn't that much, but he won't believe me. I know guys who've run identical F-150's up into the 250K's.

You should listen to your father, he knows you better than you know yourself

The 300 6 cyl is a great engine. One of fords best light duty engines made. We had an 81 4x4 with the 300 in it and finally replaced the motor at around 220,000. We only needed to replace a leaky rear main seal though. Oddly enough I had a 94 F150 with the same motor and it sprung a leak from the rear main at around 75,000 miles on it. I traded it in, dealer fixed it and is still running around town. Just don't know how many miles is on it now.

Here is my old 95 XLT 4*4 w/ 5.8L. It was a great truck. I sold it with 155000km's (approx 96000miles). I did do the front ball joints and stuff on it cause stuff like that does wear out. The tranny was never touched, the engine ran great and had lots of power and was untouched. If you are capable and willing to do mechanical work yourself and budget for the required maintenance of ANY vehicle of that age/mileage, then I say go for it, cause it WILL break down and will need maintenance. That being said, repairs will be relatively inexpensive and readily available. There are a ton of aftermarket parts for the that drivetrain (alot of 5.0 mustang parts are interchangeable) and other components can be easily found at an auto recycler or any napa etc. If it were me, I would make sure it was rust free, and the paint/body was good, and then I'd be concerned with the mechanical just cause I can fix the mechanical. That truck was still simple to maintain compared to the newer trucks and easier to access stuff under the hood.
edit: just noticed it was a v6, but my point still applies, just not to the mustang parts.

Since it is 4x4, that is a pretty good deal. 90 k is really low for a 11 year old vehicle.

This is actually the kind of thing I was looking for a few months ago, only in XCab. I settled for an 04 XCab XLT instead. haha.

Sounds like a good deal. But listen to your dad, take his advice, if he gives in and it blows up you will never ever hear the end of it. Plus, he has been around the block a few more times than you have.

good luck.

That truck rocks and that engine is one of the toughest out there...should get 200K out of it. I bought my truck; a longbed; in 1999 for $11K with 57K miles if you want a comparison. He has 125K miles or so now; havent had any problems with the engine.

Not only would I never hear the end of it, but I would never live it down! I'm ort of in a cram though, my brother gets his liscense in a month and he will get my car so I have to find a truck in less than a month and I'm not sure if I will find a better deal than this!

He doesn't know anything about buying used cars though....he's never bought one before. He drives a porsche...get what I'm saying? lol

I'm picturing someone who never opens the hood other than to check oil, anything else is to the dealer or a shop? Doesn't sound like an older 4*4 is in the cards for ya unless you are willing to repair stuff on your own or can afford to take it into a shop for repair. Or maybe I'm way off base on my assumption which may be a first for me!........well, in the last five minutes anyways Good luck bud.
