its a laptop
i'd reformat but im lazy, and im in the middle of my thesis, but i dont have the cd for autodesk06 (work owns it) rhino (school owns it) agi32 (school owns it)

will do the atapi steps listed above though EDIT: ive got 3 ide controllers- an intel 8280 IEB Ultra ATA controller, a primary ide channel, and a secondary ide channel

as for system mechanic 6- holy chit batman! im 'critical' if i let it do some optimizing- is it going to cause more problems than its worth?

Most likely that it's the primary...
I would switch them all to PIO and see how it runs.
If the motherboard does not support DMA, then it's not going ot support it on any of them.
Since it is so new it should so you may have go to dells website and see if dell has an update for your MB IDE controlers.

Sorry...I didn't notice in your first post that it's a laptop.

I have seen ATAPI errors on some of our workstations, and usually right before the CD/ROM drive stops being able to read CD's.

Replace the drive, problem and errors go away.

I'm not too familiar with Dell's.

Our HP laptops though, some have removable drives , some don't (there permanent mounted into the chassis)

Me either, I've got a HP Pavilion, 2 screws and it slides out. My old HP wouldn't, it was an internal affair to get it out.

Start/run type (prefetch) delete all files in that folder.

You can also do your temps

Start/Run type (%temp%) delete all files in that folder as well.

Edited to add:
There maybe one or two files that will not give you access to delete them. That's ok just skip over those.

Huge help for me. Thanks for posting this. My computer is a rocketship again.

At least you have your own space in the basement, next to the boiler room.

Pshhh I'm not next to the boiler room. I am right next to the boiler!

Between the boiler and the flood sump pump.
