Oh well, I hate doing it because I dont like taking the extra 2 seconds to paint my white or black stroke over it with MS Paint. I do it anyways and have been doing it for years. There must be some real reason...and I agree its for privacy...though it takes some research to find out things...people know people and if there is something that can link you to it...Im sure it will link to other things????
Good question though...

The difference is if I really wanted to I could get all of your personal information before I finished reading this thread. With going to a shopping mall and writing down licence plates it's a bit of a hassel since most people don't care enough. Drive to the mall, write down licence plate number, come home, get on computer, look up info. Although possible, not worth mosts time and also on forums like this you have an idea of who a person is and if maybe you don't like that person and want to harass him you could all without leaving your seat. At a shopping mall, you don't have a clue who owns that vehicle so who cares?
Do you guys remember that one thread that linked to a 4x4 forum where that kid got phone calls and all of his personal information displayed because of a sale gone bad? It even included his parents address and how much their house was when the purchased it and how much it's worth now. There's alot of public information out there that can be used against you.

If you are so confident that no one will EVER want to harass you or you family, why not post your name, address, phone number, social security number, drivers’ license number, date of birth, mother’s maiden name, etc. in a post?
I am sure no one will data mine it, after all, you live in a nice safe neighborhood with no criminals and it is so unlikely that any criminals will EVER read your post, right?
You do know that these posts are more or less permanent?
If you ever put up a classified in this forum you will get some wonderful spam from all over the world, people just trying to get any/all of your personal information to use in various illicit ways.
This goes back a long way; In one of the first news groups I joined, back in the early 90's one of the guys became unpopular with some of the other users.
Several set out to harass him. It ended with all his personal information, his kids’ information, pictures of inside his house, his place of work information, even his credit card numbers. It finally peaked with pictures of his kids in the school yard, on the way to school etc. They even managed to get his wife fired from a county job by posting things that she had said/done privately.
There were legal repercussions and a lot of very bad will.
The poor sod actually ended up moving from the small Oregon town that had been his home for years. He feared something bad happing to his children.
Fortunately it ended with no violence, but if he had hurt/killed one of the jerks responsible, I think I would have understood completely.
It pays to be a little careful with something you are BROADCASTING to the entire world, and recording for 'posterity'.

Web sites like this might give personal info.........there are several out there that require yearly memberships. I havn't tried it before, but I'm sure are individuals who have nothing better to do.
