List out the features you want, you've already settled on a price, now go find a matching Nikon. For that kinda' money, you can get a really, really nice Nikon, and they are the best in the business ( My mother-in-law is a professional photographer, and my wife is an amatuer, trust me when I say this, it's all I hear about... )

I don't know much about the point and shoots, but wife does and she says to go with Kodak. She recomends looking at the Z "High zoom" series

http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQueri...q-locale=en_US

Largest they have is 12x optical zoom for $399.95

Best thing is to go to any photography store and or even walmart photo center and look at them. You can pick them up, try them out, etc, etc. Because you can't tell how bulky or awkward it might be to use from a web site.

I don't know how up on d photography you are, but don't get caught up in who has the most megapixels. That really has little to do with the camera. We have discussed this in threads here not to long ago, should be easy to dig up. If I get time later I might search and see if I can find one of those threads.

Nikon's are nice.... but I dont know if you can get high zoom at low price....

If I was buying a new one today. This would be it.

Nikon vs Canon is like Xcal2 vs Edge. You really can't go wrong with either one.

I have a Canon G5. The current version is the G6. Adorama usually has competitive prices. http://www.adorama.com/ICAS3.html

Canon Powershot website http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/con...categoryid=113

Another vote for Canon.

My wife has the A75, and I use the S1 IS.

That S3 IS looks great in black. I may have to move up to that one myself.

Do they have a mid range DC that has image stabalization? I think I've seen it in some of the $1k ones (and video cameras), but nowhere else.

I've got the Cannon A95 the new ones are about $300 I think.
"Together with the Canon PowerShot A610, the PowerShot A620 replaces the wildly popular PowerShot A95. This model incorporates a 7-megapixel CCD, and both have a modestly updated body design, use the same 4X zoom lens as that of the Canon G series, and boast a 2-inch LCD."

Nikon
My dad was a Navy photographer, has a closet full of F4's & F5's and now he is looking to switch over to the pro digital SLR cameras. For messing around shots he has a small Nikon Coolpix 5600. I don't know much about the specs but it was pretty reasonable.

I have the Sony T-7 with 3 x Carl Zeiss zoom and it had dissapointing image quality compared to the older sonys. I kept it because its very small.
