Funny story... or so I thought...

Well, as many of you know I recently started a new job, and so far am enjoying it.

Well, I talked to an old co-worker today who left before I did. He told me that a lot of the books he passed on to me were his personal books, not the companies, and that I should go get them and use them. They were old Pro/e manuals, and it looks like I'll be using Pro/e again.

Well, I emailed a friend who still works for my old company asking if he could get the books for me.

He wrote me back to say that some of the "other" office folks were there, and had brought Pro/e Flex3C. Almost everything PTC offers in one package, and that the engineering guy from the "other" office was in a Pro/e class right now, and that they want my friend to try it out...

Well, one of my main reasons for quitting was that I was told the basic Pro/e package was way more than I needed, and that there was no way in hell I would get to use it. I HAD to use AutoCAD, no ifs/ands or buts! Now that I've been gone for a little over a week they're talking about using Pro/e and not just the basics, they're checking out the most expensive possiblity...

Ugh!!! I just kinda hope I can get those manuals...

Cruel twist of fate?? I am glad you enjoy your new job and I hope this doesn't make you regret your decision to change.

Is Pro/e used for 3d modeling? I've only use Autocad for the past 8-9 years and have never had the need for a true 3d modeling program although I have heard other cad techs talk about them.

ProE rocks! I had a class in college covering that software (I'm a civil engineer, figure that one out). I was always playing around with it in my free time drawing up different stuff. AutoCAD of course is 3D capable, but can't touch ProE in that regard.

Boy do I feel stupid...

He was just pulling my chain. I guess the reason I got so in to it was that he knew what Flex3C was, and he knows nothing of Pro/e, and has never shown any interest.

Yes, Pro/e is a true parametric (you can make changes on the fly any time) 3D modeler. I'm quite happy with it. Gives you lots of options, and really not as difficult as most people think...

But yes, things are going pretty good here. I just got my desk yesterday, and I'm ready to go. Just waiting on my chair (using one from the conference room for now). I'm just using a demo of Pro/e for now, but looks like we'll be getting a full license here pretty soon with Pro/Intralink... Data management...

AutoCAD 3D is a joke. AutoDesk does have a similar parmetric 3D program called Inventor, that is decent, but I wouldn't want to have to use it daily/professionally. I've got a friend who was using it, and all he could do was complain about it after he really got into it. He too had used Pro/e for many years...

I have used Architectural Desktop which is really good for 3D modeling of buildings. It is an amazing program but still can't hand with Pro/E.
