Can an Idiot build a website?

The title pretty much sums it up.

I being the idiot, know nothing about where to start and what to do.

Anyone offer any pointers or places to turn to.

I don't remember if i asked this before, and looked through my past posts some, but didn't see anything.

Thanks

dave

Go get microsoft office frontpage 2003. I have used frontpage98 and 2000 in the past and they didn't require you to know any programming language. I taught myself how to use them and built a couple nice sites. One of which I turned in for a college class later (Web Design) and got an "A". I still have no clue how to write anything, but those programs where retarded easy.

Frontpage is a great starting package. It wont do much of anything fancy but you can build a decent site without knowing a lick of HTML.

So yea you can do it.

So the answer is yes!

I built my first 2 or 3 in FrontPage. I taught myself too.
If you can search for or make images, then copy and paste them and type text where you want it on the page (not in code) but on the actual page, then yea you can do it too with FrontPage. Once you get everything in place then hit publish web site and it will save it to a folder. Then upload everything in that folder to a host.

Front page is a crutch and will prevent you from learning any real coding (Microsoft likes to do that). But you can build a web page (even a dynamic one) with frontpage.

I disagree that it is a crutch. A crutch supports you when you cant support yourself. If somone has little interest in learning coding and wants to produce a nice site, Frontpage does a nice job.

Is Dreamweaver a crutch? Heck anything more than notepad would be a crutch if it simplifies the method. Just because one can do it in notepad doesn't mean one should.

I agree one will never get proficient at HTML with FP but maybe he doesn't need to be.

I use DW now and I'm still learning code. Mainly from just adding scripts someone else has written. I could not come close to sitting down with notepad and even be able to get a back ground color.
I can find BKGRND color on a page in notepad and change it to whatever I want as well as change just about anything else. But I dont know enough to write it from scratch.

But I agree a program is not a crutch it's either an aid or a tool or both. One who has it and would and not use it for either purpose would be a fool.

That's like saying, "Ahh I need to take this screw out... I have this screwdriver laying here next to me, but that is just a crutch. I can get it with my fingernail. (I like tatertots)"

That;s funny right there, I didn't even think of it or I might have. Although I think I've been pushing my envelope with him this week, so that could have been the move to cut my throat.

Still funny!

FP is a crutch. If you build web pages for a year in FP and you take FP away, you are completely useless. DW does have a nice WSIWYG but you still have to write code. I havent used FP since 97, but you can honestly build a server side scripting page (like asp) with nothing but the WYSIWYG editor any not see a lick of code. I learned it in 97 and when I switched jobs, I was useless because everything was com/asp without frontpage. I had to actually learn how to program. When you look at the code FP makes for you, its absolutely dog crap. FP is great for the average joe making a quick web page but I wouldnt go building enterprise applications with it. That's why MS also makes VS .net 2005 and the .net framework 2.0. Managed code, thats what its all about.

My thoughts exactly. Not everyone desires that high level of HTML mastery to make it in this world.

BTW, WTF IS WYSIWYG?
Exactly.

"Raw HTML". Kids today!

I'm an old COBOL and FORTRAN programmer.
Do you have any idea how many cards it took to put a date on the screen?

and God forbid you should drop your deck on your way to the I/O window.
