Any Excel/Spreadsheet gurus?
Any Excel/Spreadsheet gurus?
Is there a way to format a spreadsheet so that column headings and/or anything else at the top can be excluded from a data sort without highlighting what you want to sort?
I'm trying to do a primitive/temporary inventory spreadsheet, but I want to be able to list some info at the top, but then be able to sort the whole thing without including my column headings and that info in my sort... make sense?

I dont know how foolish you're being but I'm going to guess pretty foolish and give you that answer. When you Sort, there is a Checkbox called Header_Row. Select it.
If you want more data, leave an empty row under your data so when you sort the data below the empty row acts as a barrier

Yes, I am an Excel expert...
I had no idea how powerful this program was, until I took a semester-long Excel class... This SOB can do a Lot... I see no need for Microsoft Access, but- those that use it say it's even more powerful than Excel...
I'm also great at PowerPoint.

But, they did teach it all, and I did retain how to do functions, charts, pivot tables, and just about anything the normal office worker woudl ever need excel to do. I was amazed at how you can program the thing via macro's (if you have a small business) to link with MSWord, and type your pre-formatted letters to your clients... We did it all.
It was a great class, but the professor made it very hard. If you had one mistake, you automatically lost 10 points, 2 mistakes + 20 points, 3, and if you made 4 mistakes you failed. I hae it when a professor takes what shoudl be an easy class, and makes it super-difficult... I still got an "A", but, not wiothout my share of nail biting... (In fact, I had that class at 1:00 PM, and had to complete my assignement before heading to class that day, when 9/11 happened...) Funny how you'll never forget what you were doing, or had to do, on that day...

I have a question for ya UC.
Did you take any classes, or are you self taught? I'm just curious. I have messed with Excel a million times, and it is just a confusing application. It's a great tool, but can be really hard to understand at times.
I use Excel daily but it is mainly the basic stuff. I have had some training on the exotic stuff it will do, but my problem is that I don't use the part of it for a long period, I lose it.

As far as Macros are concerned, I learned that on the job by myself. When I started here I did lead processing. Everything was repetitive!! I started by using the Record New Macro tool to automate simple things. I quickly learned the Record Macro tool is limited so I started studying the VB code behind the macros I was using. I already knew basic programming so it wasn't that complicated. As I progressed, I started asking people online for help with making some very complex macros. At this point; I can do some crazy stuff simply by combining different macros I've already developed. Some of my favorite macros are the simplest but they continue to come in useful to do different types of things.
