Knoppix (Linux via CD)

Have any of you tried Knoppix? Basically, this is a complete version of Linux that will boot directly from a CD. I needed to get some info from a damaged HDD that would not boot....so I loaded Knoppix and was able to mount the damaged drive and recover most all the data I needed!

IT guys (and those of you that are just plain curious about LINUX) should definitely try this out if you have not already.....

EDIT TO ADD:

The CD version comes loaded with OpenOffice and GIMP.....as well as drivers for most all hardware needed...

Knoppix is awesome. In a networking class I took one time, the hard drives were taken out between classes b/c everyone used their own hard drive. I freaked out the teacher because I had linux running on a computer without a hard drive!

Why wouldn't it boot?
The bushing must have been good if you were able to get it to spin to retrive the data. Was the boot sector just corrupt?
But I guess that beats pulling it out and putting it as slave on another machine. to get the data before you format.
Interesting, I'll check it out.
