%#!@#%#!!!! iPod!

I'm rapidly losing my patience with this thing. I've been batting 1000 for lousy luck with computers as of late. Since going to system recovery per this thread:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=231183

Now whenever I try to start iTunes, it locks up. "This program has encountered an error and needs to close." I've removed and reinstalled iTunes several times over to no avail. It worked yesterday, and today it's kaput. At this rate, I'm torn whether to fling this stupid thing out the window or give it away to someone. I guess I'll shoot Apple's tech support an E-mail in the meantime, but anyone got any idea what I screwed up this time?

Sorry to hear about your troubles, but if you decide to give it away I'll be more than happy to take it off your hands.

On a side note, I usually get a message from iTunes that some files is corrupt, but it's never been a problem. It always works like it's supposed to.

Are you installing iTunes from Apple's website? Or are you installing the iTunes that came with your iPod? You should have the best luck downloading the newest version from Apple's website.

Quintin, have you given your hardware a good check lately? I ask because I recently had some intermittent, odd errors not unlike what you've described in this thread and the other. I did restores, re-installs, and all kinds of junk. For a while, everything was fine. After a few days or weeks, things started to crap out again. Turns out I had a hard drive going bad. It never got so bad that I couldn't back things up first, but I had a lot of ups and downs before I downloaded a diag program from the hard drive maker and discovered that the drive was going down the tubes. Just something to check out...

Hope you figure out your problems.

an iPod can always be fixed (but you might lose any music on it)

Can you start it in disk mode? (Reset it by holding the middle button and play/pause for 5 - 10 seconds, then as soon as you see the apple logo appear, press Menu and the middle button, you might be able to just hold it, or press it multiple times) You will see it load into a black and white screen (don't panic, this is normal) and should say disk mode on the screen. If you can get this far, you can fix the iPod.

From there, download the HP Formatter tool (I'll get you a link and instructions later) and format the iPod, then restart it again using the middle button and play/pause, and use the apple iPod Updater to re-install the apple firmware.

I'm no expert on this, but sounds like you have another music program that is conflicting with iTunes.

I recently got a new computer and a new ipod for my wife. The computer had a Yahoo! Jukebox program on it. Until I deleted that, it and iTunes kept fighting for supremacy, and the iTunes kept messing up.

If you have any other program used to manage your music, I would uninstall that, then reinstall iTunes. This approach worked for me.

After a little over a year of use we had a similar problem with one of our Ipods. Reload, then plays well for awhile, then crashes and needed reloading of system. Finally it wouldn't take the system load anymore. I went back to stratch, and reload all the orginal software, then went through the updates to current. Worked for awhile, then crashed again.

We finally brought it to the Apple store service center and let a genius look at it. He fiddled with it for about 10 minutes, then gave us a new one. Problem solved.

Your description sounds like you are referring to iTunes on your computer and not your iPod.

I am with Dirt Bike Dave on this. It sounds like you have another music program vying for being the default program. Either that or you have a virus/spyware on your PC (assuming you unfortunately have windoze).

Remove the other music playing programs AND remove iTunes. After all such programs removed THEN do whatever you kids who use windows have to do to remove all viruses and spyware, THEN reinstall iTunes. You should be good to go.

I've never had a problem with iTunes, and none of my associates who use Windows and use iTunes have problems. If you have the most recent version of iTunes, you should have no problems, it's proven to be rock solid.

The problem is most likely related to quicktime

First...

Backup your music folder to another location.

(Just copy it to a temp place, just in case)

Next Uninstall Itunes
Now Uninstall Quicktime
Now Reinstall an old copy of Quicktime from here Linky poo version 6 should be good

Now uninstall that quicktime
Now reinstall Itunes

Stupid I know but it should work.

I don't think it's another media player fighting for supremacy, iTunes was working just fine a few days ago when I got my iPod. I've been installing it from the CD that came with the 'pod. I think I screwed up when I re-installed iTunes after the system recovery, 'cause I thought that upon recovery it would have wiped iTunes out. I don't think it did, if anything, I think it created a duplicate version of iTunes and QT and it's getting confused as to what version to use. I'm gonna kill everything off and download the latest versions of iTunes and Quicktime and see what happens. Thanks y'all (again).

itunes sucks anyway if your not buying music from them use winamp. It lets you add and remove songs and do whatever else you want.

For future reference....system restore does not remove your data or documents. It is generally pretty safe and a pretty nice tool that M$ included.

Just an FYI. Take care of the quicktime it should fix it. (QT goes in with Itunes and if the system restore reinstalled an incompatible dll with Quicktime that will be the cause.)
