Laptop crashed, anyone know if this can be fixed?

Here is the message that is displayed after trying to reload windows xp on my home laptop. I have already purchased a new laptop, but I would like to be able to get the old one back up and running so that maybe my wife can use it as her primary laptop. Anyone know how to fix this?

Unfortunately, I have never been able to have any luck reloading a M$ kernel.....your best bet is to boot from the XP disc, format the drive and reload Windows from scratch.....best of luck....

probably wouldn't even have to format, just put in the disc and load windows. It should keep all your files that way.

I have tried to reboot from the Windows XP disc reformatting the hard drive. It loads everything up fine. Then I have to restart the computer and this is what has come up the last two times after restarting. Then I have to start the entire process over again. Since it takes about an hour to reload XP, I have not had the patience to go at it again.

I was hoping there was some secret that I was missing.

Have you tried deleting the partition and then creating a new one? Then you format the new partition. This is all done in the windows install screen. You'll see the option there for it. I've had that cure problems like this. It's like there's a bad sector that windows insists on putting that file into or it never really deletes it. Deleting the partition seems to "rearange" where it puts files.

ok the way i fix it is to extract the files from the main XP .cab file off of the cd that way you have all of the files in front of you that are necessary for the install. From that point i just installed XP like you normally would... if you have any problems book Xp off of the exracted files cd that you just made and just copy the file from the cd to the desired location on the hardrive that windows is asking for.

I tried what Viper suggested I do and now the computer seems to be working perfectly. I have it set up with the new wireless network that I bought at CompUSA and finally have a SECURE wireless network.

I hope my wife is happy about her "new" computer.
