Help Picking Laptop

Since I'm going to be going to college next year i'm looking for a laptop so I can take it with me. I dont know a lot about the technical stuff and dont really care but i'm looking for a good laptop. I don't want to spend over $1,500 on it(actually my parents don't). I like gateway because I've always had gateway and have had no problems with them but I also like the Sony VAIO series. Could someone tell me what the best laptop I can get for $1,500. I would like to have atleast a '15 screen and a CD/DVD RW drive.

My son is in college and I offered to buy him a laptop and he didn't want one. He likes his Dell desktop. I also have a Dell which I like. I bought my wife a Dell laptop with a 15" wide screen monitor for $1200. She likes it. Dell has a great selection. The Sony has a lot of bang for the buck. I don't think you could go wrong with the Sony or Gateway.

Alienware

starts at $899, $1,459, $3,099

They also have some for $759..

Best off the shelf systems and best customer support you can get.

I've had one for 4 years, and it's withstood my abuse and that of my 3 kids. That's gotta be the mark of a good laptop....

This is only based on customer service and the deals that can be had if you look around.

Dell, is by far the best I have seen. There have been a few people at work buy laptops and the Dell's are always right on the money. Have they had problems, yeah and then you get customer service. One of the guys had a line apear on the screen a couple of days after receiving it. A dude drove to our office switched it out and said have a good day. I was like WTF, this was maybe one or two days after he put in the call and it was really easy for him. My father had a mouse go out after about a year, track ball old skool, he called to see about getting a replacement, they sent him a new one next day air free. Like I said there may be better ones out there but man I can't imagine better service. check out the below website for deals. I have personally configured two for people and saved over 40% off list.

I got a DELL 610 Get the Complete Care package if you can swing it $$$ moneywise and Gold Tech Support, you can get academic versions of any Software you need at a campus bookstore and whatever college you go to may have an IT agreement with a manufacturer.
Dell had a promo www.dell.com/neworleans click on stsrt shopping under recommended bundles this is an awesome deal however you need a .edu email address to qualify so maybe see what you can do to get one or get a buddy who is already in college to order it for you. Depends on what you are going into AGBUS by the looks of it, go ahead and by MS Office PRo and get Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.

Dell has some good deals
Sony is more expensive but better
HPs are good too
Alienware is more of a gaming PC isnt it? they put some good graphics/sound cards and lots of memory in those. Not really a school laptop

Not thier laptops so much.
Of course there is not a laptop for gaming on the market from anybody that I know of except a cutom build. But they also have normal PC's built for anything from audio editing or graphic editing or just normal everyday use too.
The ones for less than $2K are the normal everyday computing needs systems. word editing, internet, e-mail simple PP presentaions, etc

But I <3 my HP.
I like IBM, too, if they even make notebooks anymore since they just sold out their PC division as I recall
Not the; Area 51, M5700 he's looking at. Same as a mid level Dell for less coin.

I hate our HP zt1100, but its old. It's been fairly good, I bought it used. But it's got a hang up thru out everything; I even installed the OS clean 4 times when we first got it trying to release it, complete format the works. But it still takes forever to process anything.

Yea I looked at getting a Titanium last year and talked myself out of it.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A45. I bought in April of '04. It worked great for about six months and started having problems. It has problems today. I wouldn't reccomend that one.

You don't have to spend a bunch of money for a good lap top. I think there is a temptation to get the one with the biggest hard drive and the most memory. I think the most important thing to look for is a powerful processor. The memory and hard drive can be upgraded pretty easily.

My nephew got a Dell Inspiron for school. It seems like a good computer.
