Voice Recognition programs

What voice recognition programs do ya'll have and use? My executive director is not very computer literate and I have been looking into setting his laptop up with some sort of system that will allow him (and his assistants) save some time when it comes to email/memos/letters.

I have been looking at the Dragon software....but are there any other options that are "good"?

I've used Dragon quite a bit, as well as several other programs that have come and gone, and I give them mixed reviews. Dragon is the best of those I've used.

I don't know how much voice software will help someone... it's pretty lousy (IME) for command/control, and it's OK for entering text, if you speak clearly and fairly slowly. If you use much in the way of specialized vocabulary, it will take some time to train it to recognize those words, but once you do, it works well.

One final thing: unless the laptop is really powerful, voice software will run really slowly (and it will slow down everything else running on the machine, too). It does much better on a fast desktop, IME.

Hope this helps!

Gotta agree....it will be more trouble than its worth. I've tried similar solutions in the past and the frustration level was so high he went back to hunt and pecking. Save yourself the aggravation.

For now VR is best for people who understand the technology and its limitations
