Windows XP upgrade question...

It's been decided to upgrade my Win 2000 Pro computer to Win XP Pro. I think I'm the only one in the office still using 2000 instead of XP.

Well, today we got Win XP Pro, but got the stand alone version not the upgrade. It says on the box for Win 95 & earlier or PC's without Windows. Will I be able to use this, or should I take it back and get the upgrade version?

Well, that's why I go this one. I've have problems with 2000, and didn't want anything carrying over. But it seems like I've tried to do something like this before, and it wouldn't install... Just wanted to double check before I open the package...

Make sure you backup any local files you need. I think a clean load periodically is good too.

I've never had a problem with the full version upgrading . Just stick it in run the setup. Personally though....back it up....format...reinstall....you'll be much happier in the end.

Vista is actually a good OS, as far as windows goes. I wonder why?!?!?! :P It's based almost entirely off of OSX and Linux, thats why! but I wouldn't have bought XP pro.. I can get it for erm... uuh... the alternate method that is of perfect legality because I do not support piracy...
At this point, buying XP is just a waste. 2000 is also more stable, XP is just more feature rich and gets more attention from Micro$oft.

in your case the upgrade would be up to $100 cheaper and have no impact in the upgrade path
You can do a clean install with the upgrade version - upgrade JUST means you are currently running windows on that PC

So, could I do a format for a clean start, and still use the "upgrade" version? I haven't opened the package yet...

I mostly wanted XP to be on the same page as everyone else in the office.

Yeah, you can use the upgrade version to do a clean install. At some point during the install, it will prompt you to insert the win98/win2000/whatever CD, to prove you are eligible for an upgrade. So have an older windows CD handy while installing new with an XP upgrade CD.

Yep, like he said, you can use the Upgrade version to do a clean install as long as you have a CD of the previous version handy for verification.

Alrighty, I think I'll take this back, and get this upgrade tomorrow. I've still got my 2000 CD.
