Controlling Instant Messengers

I need to find software that can control access to instant messengers, the file transfers within them, etc. This isnt on my corporate network it is for an individual system. Does anyone here have one they recommend?

Thanks

Put the server hostnames in the hosts file pointing to the PC's loopback address. Not many idiot kids know about it, but they darn sure know how to disable a firewall or unblock some apps.

No, I could block them I need to control them. usage times, users that can be contacted, restricing file transfers, etc.

BTW...blocking a port to stop IMs if usually ineffective. They are very resourceful little pieces of crap. They will keep searching for an open port. It is much more effective to block the addresses they attempt to contact.

Yeah... The HTTPPort client will get right past blocked ports.

Depend on what IM client they are using, there is software to do this. Or if you have someone that knows what they are doing you may be able to write something to look at and record the targeted traffic.

http://www.stellarim.com/ is one of them.

I didnt realize that this was for personal use. There is a plug you put between your keyboard and pc that will record everything that is typed. You then stick it in the USB slot and it dumps out everything that was typed. Its pretty easy to hide.

Also, most IMs have logs, unless the user knows how to clear them, you can look at those.

Have that program connect to the actual servers but filter out anything you don't want. Just run it as a hidden process.

...hmm, I wonder how hard that would be to write.
I have no idea but I'm not working that hard on it
