Thanks for all of the input guys. I was all set to get the Leupold, then a Zeiss 3-9x40 caught my eye and my shopping was done. I am pretty happy with my purchase. Between the gun and the scope, I think I am set for some time.

Here are some new pics, sorry about the quality.

I use a Nikon Buckmasters series 3-9x40 on my 270. It's a great scope and I love it. I also like the leupold I've got on my remington 22 mag but not as much as my nikon.

You wanted to stay under 400, and you bought a Ziess? My scope was like 500 and for a ziess with the same power, like 850. WHere did you find a ziess for under 4

I was at Sports Authority tonight and just happened to walk by the gun department. They had a 30-06 for about $589 or so. I gave $675 for the 300 WSM at a local gun store. I wanted the 300 WSM, but if I had known about the 30-06 at that price, I would have probably gotten it or at least made the decision harder.

All of the local dealers said that they will not be getting any more Winchester Model 70's or Model 94's.

Crap. Thanks for the info. Looks like I'm going to have to make my move sooner than expected.

$439, so I overshot my budget, but I think it was worth it.

Oooh, nice. how do you like that scope? I have a 700P that is in need of glass, but I'm out of money and don't have any desired direction for it right now.

lrhogfan,

Looks good! I've heard good things about Zeiss, please let us know how you like it.

Crystal clear, tracks well. Wish it had target turrets on it, but whenever I get around to it, I'm gonna replace that scope with one of Leupold's long range target models, with a Badger Ordnance or Ken Farrell base and ring setup. That poor ol' rifle don't know it yet, but it's gonna be the start of a dedicated long range rig when funds allow...

Carl Zeiss makes some of the best glass in the world.
Most popular in photography for it's ability to display sharpness and detailed contrast.
You might wish for larger than 40mm a time or two at dawn or dusk when you think you see something at 300 yards.
But you got a heck of a scope regardless.

Best Scope that I've ever had was a Simmons 3-9x50 Deerfield.
Didn't matter what lighting conditions were, you could even use it at night if you wanted. Of course I never did.

Good to hear! I plan on doing the same thing to mine when funds allow. I want to get a tactical bolt **** installed too, the stock one doesn't do it for me.

I bought a Luepold Vari-X III 2.5 x 8 for $400. I had a buddy of mine talk me into it, glad he did, the optics are amazing even in low light conditions. I've got it on my .338 I custom built last year:
