I think the manual shifter usually goes on the floor.

PSS is showing his age...He's thinking of trucks back in the day that 3 speed column shifters, more commonly known as "Three on the tree". Out of curiosity, does anyone know when they stopped using column shifters (what year) and what truck was the last to have one?

That reminds me of an '86 F-250 4sp(floor) that would not FULLY disengage the clutch with the pedal pressed. Wound up being that the plate that the clutch fluid resevior was attatched to had come loose off the firewall(broke a few spot welds)and was only visible when someone stepped on the clutch. I had to fab a piece of angle iron to pin it back.
Probably different in the '01(I would guess) but thought I'd mention it.

Okay here's what you do. Drain out that nasty fluid also drain the transfer case if its a 4x4. Then add proper amount of new fluid using Mobil AFT. I did it in mine and it shifts better. Just remember that these Mazda 5 speeds are not speed shifters by any means so the slower the shift the better it works. I never really have any issues shifting except when its very cold outside and the mobil 1 ATF worked out well.
