Ok, here is the story, about two weeks ago one of my friends called me and said she had just purchased a new PC, Laptop, Wireless Printer, and a new Wireless router. She asked if I could come set it up. I usually don't do this on the side because people will never leave you alone when you help with their PC's(I have no clue why).

So, I get everything set up and running great, Printer, Laptop, PC and router. I tell her NOT to monkey around with the settings on the Router do to it being sensitive to ANY changes you make to them. Hell, I see Desktops everyday stop working for no reason and then start working again for no reason, so that last thing I want is someone who has no clue what they are doing to start screwing with it.

Well, I guess I asked wayyyyyyy too much from her. She called me this evening whining about how nothing worked.....blah.....blah......blah. She tells me her son(which is great at this stuff ) set up her security on the WLAN. Well, all I can say is I'm glad he doesn't work in my IT Dept.

Anyway, the Cable Modem was plugged into port 1 on the router and the PC was plugged into the Ethernet port on the router and she was wondering why she couldn't get Internet access on her PC( I wonder why ) Anyway, I had the PC hardwired to the router and the Laptop and Printer running wireless to it and she still doesn't have those two back up running yet. I tried to walk her through as much as I could on the phone, but when you deal with someone who's every other words are "I hate these things" well, then I can only help you so much. I think I could train a damned paper clip to do this stuff, but not people like that.

So, to sum this all up, why on earth would you screw with something that you have no idea what you are doing. Again, this is why I don't help friends with their personal PC's. If you have no clue what you are doing, then fine, I don’t expect everyone to like PCs, Networks…etc or even understand then, but if that is the case, then leave it alone when it works.
