They could do it now if they wanted.

They're net income, I believe, is almsot that of the current value of GM itself.

How can the American people give all this money away to other contries like this? We need to support the U.S and buy are American vehicals!

I want to see those Jap and german car companies fold up. We have the power to see that happen, just don't buy there crap!

If American car companies made good quality cars then maybe Americans would buy them. Until that day comes they don't stand much of a chance besides the people who only buy American.
Their health care costs are what's killing them. The foreign companies don't have to deal with stupid unions or pay outrageous pensions and health care costs.

Japanese have had manufacturing plants in the US for quite some time now. They do have to deal with the UAW, but haven't been dealing with them long enough to have the amount of healthcare & pension costs of retirees like the BIG 3 have. It will eventually catch up to them too, but I'm sure they will just pull out of the US, and still sell a buttload of cars (based solely on their reputation - which was made on their American built cars - like Camry and Accord). People will still by a Japanese made Accord, but if let's say Ford built a bunch more factories in Mexico and South America (due to NAFTA etc.) most on here wouldn't buy that Ford (not made here). The auto industry is gonna change, and BIG TIME change very soon. It is kinda scary when you think about it.

Due to years of labor unions and poor retirement plan decisions, GM now spends more on employee health care per automobile than they do on steel. Korean health care costs per vehicle are a tiny fraction of GMs.

Toyota, in general, builds a more reliable vehicle than Ford or Chevy. I love my Ford, but the build quality is of my Ford is really lousy. I've had more problems in the first 20,000 miles of owning my Ford than in 200,000 miles on my wife's last two imports.

Yea why pay americans a decent wage with health care and retirement benefits. We should pay them all minimum wage. Talk about unamerican. This country was built on the back of the american worker and they should be compensated. If it was not for unions we would be working 80 hour weeks with no benefits. I bet you are a stockholder in walmart. Maybe they should build your next truck.

Are you kidding me?????? Foriegn car companies I.E. Honda, Toyotas, and now Hyundai are building plants here, supplying jobs to AMERICANS. The are building Billion dollar facilities and Producing high quality vehicles, by AMERICANS. I'm sorry, but competition is what makes the world go round, your statement has no merit. I see Ford, Dodge, GM vehicles comming from Canada all the time, its like a freakin parade! Not to mention Mexico!?

This is my first american vehicle because i've always been suspect of the Big 3. I've owned Audi, Infiniti's, and my wife has a Lexus. Don't get me wrong I really love my truck and will probably always own a truck for myself, but we will always have a foriegn vehicle in my driveway as well.

And YES Toyota will overtake GM very very soon as the largest and most reliable automaker in the world. Sorry to vent..............Did I mention I really love my FORD truck?

I've owned Audi
Theres a high quality machine built on Germany. :santa:

Look the fact is that even thow toyota makes cars here they are still a Japanese company with its top headquarters in Japan, any excess profit made my Toyota North America is sent back to Japan. Period, dont rant about competition, yes it is good but having a little loyalty to ones countrys manufactered is a good thing not to the point of idiocy but to an extent.
Americans still make large numbers of cars and trucks here, there problem is they cant afford to make cars here because of old labour union problems.
Shouldnt you by your logic be hapy that Canadians and Mexicans are making money off manufactering jobs in there contrys?????

American jobs are being sent to CANADA and MEXICO........

This county is based on choice, whether its politics, a vehicle or a bottle of shampoo. Its up to every individual how they spend there hard earned money, some people buy Foriegn, some buy american. A majority of people would rather buy a vehicle that will last them a very long time and is reliable as opposed to buying something because its the "right thing to do"........that's BS. GM has to add 1600.00 per vehicle to cover health care costs and you would think that its their problem, but its not its AMerica's problem. Ford will follow suit and so will Chrysler.

As far as my previous AUDI, it was very well put together and yes it came from GERMANY.

Actually I have quite a bit of Wal-Mart stock that I accumulated during my 4 year stint there. And if Wal-Mart built my next truck I would get a 10% discount.
And I do think that as long as people are willing to work for minimum wage then that's always what they'll be paid. People get paid what their skills and labor are worth. That's how a market economy works. I'll totally agree that it's not always pretty or right, but that's the way the world works and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Im not saying you Audi was a crappy car they are nice cars they just historically have been rather poor in terms of reliability.
Your right people buy the superior product, thats competition but the problem is it has become so engrained in peoples mind that foreigners build better cars that it is almost imposible to turn around. In the past they did build better vehicles but not anymore really and if they do its just by a hair. The truth is Americans build great vehciles but they need work still.
Like you stated Ford, GM and DC have to work with health care costs and stuff that their competitiors dont, not from Japan but here in America, Outdated Union practices that the Big 3 have to put up with the Japs dont period. America needs to do something about that but we wont well continue to talk of competition and how its great until Ford, GM and DC are either out of bussiness or whatever, then well complain. Maybe Americans like yourselves need to think about that. And do your research and learn the facts about our cars and their manufactereers.

If this was a domestic recall it would be all over the papers for days accompanied by stories on the poor state of the domestic automakers. I can't even find it off the mainpage of msnbc or in the detnews one day after.

The media is so bias against the domestics it makes me want to vomit.
