Thumbs up overdrive

Hey, hello to everyone. I'm a "new" Ford owner. Took possession of my 2000 150 yesterday and got it back from the detailer today. It looks great. I'm still numb that I've come from GM to Ford. Ride is quiet compared to my Chevy 6.5l diesel ( which was junk ) and more comfortable than my 94 Chevy Tahoe 2dr. Not nearly as much bone-jarring, filling rattling.
Anyway. I've read the applicable sections of the owner's manual re: the overdrive control and can't for the life of me figure out if this thing is working or not. I surely don't see any little light that says "off" after I push the little button on the end of the gear shift lever ( manual instructions ).
Any hints or advice? Respond to Captknine@hotmail.com
Thanks

I dont know for sure but it is either in the dash or right near where you push the button itself on the handle.

You can check to see if OD is off if it wont shift into 4th.

The wiring in the shift lever is more than likely chafed, blowing the fuse for the overdrive cancel switch. Check fuse 29 in the central junction box inside the cab, it should be 5A, and it's probably blown.

First of all welcome.

This is a place to let your hair down, chill, and let all of lifes mysteries be revealed to you from the vast collective knowledge that resides here.

All right enough about my self.
The guys and gals here are great too!

Seriously,
You can learn anything that you could ever want to know here.
Some things that you will wish that you would have went the rest of your life with out knowing.
Ohh and a little bit about your truck as well.

This site has saved me very very conservatively $1K dollars in the last year in parts and repairs. Plus countless hours and lots of little tips for that little extra performance edge.

Now I'd like to tap in to the vast knowledge for a second....
There is an over drive switch on a manual transmission?
So how do you drive this?
Does it just automaticaly go in to OD?
Or do you still have to shift to 5th?
Maybe I just mis understood, I am totally confused at this.

Welcome

I have a 2000 as well, when I push the OD button on the end of the shifter a little light that says "Off" comes on at the end of the shifter by the button. If your little light isn't on then you have - a blown fuse like Quintin says or your light bulb is burned out and don't even ask me how to fix that!

Common for the wire to break at the end of the shifter in the steering column. You can take off the plastic cover around the column and try to splice it.

I think I miss understood the post....

If it is an automatic here are some pictures of my 2000 working as it should

Overdrive on

Overdrive Off

To test it incase the light is not functioning, or the switch has went out...
When going down the road if you have a tac then at 60 mph in Overdrive (with OD on) you should be hitting about 2200 RPM. In Drive (with OD Off) you will be hitting 1000-1500 rpm more.

If you dont have a tac, then going down the highway at 60 MPH hit the button. It should be a very noticable increase as it shifts in or out of overdrive.
Off: RPM's rise feels like it's always in passing gear. (it is)
On: RPM's drop and nice quiet smooth drive.

If there is no change, then likely you are in Overdrive and can not force it to come out. Likely just the switch, so proceed as Quintin and adrianspeeder described and go fromn there.
