Horse help

My cousin just gave me her horse and colt. It is a really cool horse, its actually a parade horse so it is very tame. anyway, i dont have a pen or stable built for them yet and i was considering putting them with the cattle. my question is can they eat corn silage... what stuff shouldn't they eat?

there prolly are, but between the correct responses you'll get a bunch of dumb answers so you'll need to figure out who is serious.

We feed ours all grain and supplemental hay when the grass dies.

If I was going to run them with cattle temporarily, then I would make a make shift coral out of cattle panels in the corner some where. This is where I would run the horses into to feed while I fed the cattle. I wouldn't turn them out with the cattle again until all the cattle feed was gone to prevent the horses from eating to much and foundering on the cattles feed. If they get foundered they can be ruint for life.

Just buy those 50 lb. sacks of sweet feed mix. It's got corn, grain, and molasses mixed all together. Horses love it. Any Farm supply store should carry it.

For 2 horses, two or maybe three bags a week should do fine.

I've tried it. It tastes ok until you suck the malasses off. Then it just tastes like popcorn kernels and stale doggy biscuits.

I wouldn't personally put horses in with cattle for very long. Horses invented the term "The grass is greener on the other side." Meaning Horses = hay burnig fence busters, and you will soon be chasing a whole herd of cattle every day. Been there done that way too many times.

PSS is right on the feed thing. If a horse get foundered you won't be riding

And don't fergit to keep thier water troffs full. Em' ar' horses git' real thirsty. Git' em' a salt block to lick on too. Horse's like at thar' salt. Oh, and clean out n' under neith thier hoofs every now and en'. Keeps em' from goin' in a frollick. And brush the loose hair off of em' ever chance yee git. Keeps em' lookin' real perty.

no worries about the steer/horse situation anymore... i built a separate pen for them. I got an automated heated water troff installed in there. tomorrow i'm going to farm&fleet to get a salt and mineral block and some sweet 12, and maybe a feeder bag. I'm brushing them once a week during the winter to maintain their winter coat and cleaning their hoofs every other day. been feeding them an apple or two a day.. didn't know about the orange preventing scurvy thing, interesting. thanks for the help, thats all i needed. --TJ
