4GB RAM Issue

Thanks VG!...

But I'd say that it is just a fluke, kind of like when windows use to reports back that your 20gb hard drive is only 18.5GB. Yet you could 18.5 plus another 3gb or more before it was filled up. I absolutely do not rely on windows for system utilities. It's never been accurate for me.
Yes I have all my Windows Updates.....Task Manager shows about 3.4GB of RAM compared to the 3.25GB in System Properties.....
....I would switch to a 64bit architecture...but I am not 100% comfortable with Autodesks ability to be compatible with the new architecture.....I should be due for a complete upgrade in about a year and ahalf.....so I am sure that by then Autodesk will have everything worked out with their newest release....
....I agree with you too Matt....I have never given my credit to M$ ability to report anything (especially times for copying/downloading)......I feel that the majority of their OS is just bells and whistles to ease the minds of the computer illiterate (sp?).......I would switch to a real OS as soon as Autodesk ports their software to anything other than Windows.....

I wouldn't be concerned with Autodesks software working, I'd be concerned about drivers for 64bit XP. If you have "major" hardware, you should be just fine. 32bit apps work perfectly fine in 99.99% of the cases on 64bit XP, just like 16bit apps work under 32bit anything.
BTW, I think you might be hitting the physical addressing limits of XP, which is 4GB -- where as the limit in the server products is 4GB of physical RAM itself. That is combined virtual memory and physical memory. What is your pagefile set at, and how much of it is used? If you set it to almost nothing, do those values in Task Manager and System Properties change?

Messing with the page file (even turning it off completely) does not effect what is shown in either the SysProp or TaskMan....

Did you disable the onboard video in BIOS?
Is there an echo in here?

sorry....got sidetracked.....there is no onboard video on my computer....went into the bios and there is not even a setting for it....i did notice that there was a setting "to make all system memory available for the OS".....but this was already turned on....turning it off will only allow 256MB to be made available....

WHY?
WHAT?
HUH?
Maybe so you can have a seperate softweare running on your computer that does not use the OS. But what could that be?
Windows XP Pro won't see any more than 3.37gb of memory.
Windows XP 64-bit will see all 4 gigs.
To show the 4GB of memory, you have to disable the "32-bit Memory Hole" in your BIOS and enable the boot.ini switch /3gb, although this has been known to cause other problems.
Get a 64-bit machine and OS, or live with it like it is.

Is XP-64 even out yet? I have not seen it.

It's out in "beta". You can go to microsofts website and download it for free. It works for 1 year supposedly. I've used it and there are drivers around for it. There's not a lot of software like virus checkers and firewalls that work for it though.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/default.mspx
Edit: oh, and you have to have a 64 bit processor to run it.
