I need some computer help!

I have a Dell 8600 and running windows XP.

I have a problem with something on this computer, I did try to call Dell, but I can't get a hold of anyone I can understand to help me out as there English is horrable!

at the bottom right of the screen in the Icon tray, there is a tab you click on for keeping up to Date on the Maintenace on the Computer, when you click on it, it normally tells you what needs to be updated. The last 2 or 3 weeks when ever I try to see what needs to be updated, I click in the Tab, and an Error message pops up showing this........

An error has occurred in the script on this page.

Line: 1559
Char: 1
Error: 'g_o0CX.getObi()' is null or not an object
Code: 0
URL: File://C:\Documents and settings\ALL Users\Application
Data\GTek\GTUpdate\Channels\ch2
\HTML\html\index.htm

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
Yes No

alright, now can anyone tell me what the heck this means? When I hit "NO" nothing still happends, and when I click on "YES" still, nothing happends.

What can I do for this?

Per the Great GOOGLE: gtUpdate is a system for deploying software updates and "patches", similar to Microsoft's Automatic Updates software. The system works as a CodeSurfer plug-in; it notifies users when new, vendor-issued updates are available. It can either install those updates immediately or schedule future installation times more convenient to the user. Written in C++ (50%) and Scheme (50%).

I really don't know much about it personally, but I would assume it came preloaded on your box. I would just uninstall it, and turn on Microsoft automatic updates(if not already on) rather than beat it to death.

Now, like I said, I have never used it, someone else here may be able to step in and clarify it a little more. But it it's not working correctly now, then I would trash it. Also, if its for Vendor issued updates, then you may not care about it at all until you need something updated on you PC, like fixes for a modem, NIC card.....etc Good luck.

Hope this helps.

Randall

I agree with Randall. Just uninstall it. Eats resources and doesn't really serve much of a purpose.

Yes, it did come pre-louded into the system. I just now uninstalled this program and I do have windows auto update on. With Windows Auto update on, will that be as good if not better then what I just deleted off the computer?

I agree, Trash it.

I go to windows updates and check for security updates and get updates for Norton. But if everything else is working with out conflicts.... My philosphy, " if it aint broke dont fix it".

Update doesn't always mean better, it may create a conflict with another driver that you already have. I like to install everything manualy this way I know what has been updated so I have an idea of what might be causeing the problem if it does.

PSS-MAG,

You were talking about getting updates for Norton. I do have Norton Antivirus right now and I have to renew in a couple weeks for another 40 bucks. I'm not going with Norton anymore. I have had and still have a lot of viruses on this computer with Norton installed, and I know it doesn't block viruses as good as I'd like it too.
Do you know of a better Virus Protecter I can downloud in the computer thats free to use??

PSS has a good point about doing your updates manually. If something happens to your box after an update, the you have a really good idea of what caused it, but if you are not comfortable with it, then just let Windows do it for you. Besides allot of people say they will do them manually and end up never doing them at all and then leave themself wide open for other crap to happen then blame it on Microsoft for building a crappy OS. Just let the Win Updates run and you will be fine.

Not to cut in line PSS, but Mountain if you are looking for a good free version on Anti Virus, then check out AVG. I think their site is GRISOFT.com or something. I have used it for awhile and been pretty happy with it.

EDITED for Spelling......DUH!!!!!

I have had Norton for the past several years and have never had any virus's or virus related problems. You could try reinstalling the dell support program. It came pre-loaded on my dell and always loaded automatically. I stopped it from running automatically because the majority of the time it was wasting resources. I do not ever auto update any program 1 - I do not like not knowing what a program is installing and 2 - if you have programs trying to check their websites for updates all the time it wastes bandwith and resources.

I haven't used any free ones to beable to recomend any of them. I have used Norton Pro on all 4 computers for about a year now and am happy with it for viruses. Had some trouble with the actual program occasionally, not real stable. But when it's running I keep the definitions updated twice a week and it's done fine for us. It's ussually been something simple causes it to stop responding. Had a hard time geting it to load on one of my daughters 98 SE machines. It was scoffing at me for having an inferior machine I guess.

Thought I had Sober worm a few weeks ago. Went to sarc.com (nortons site) and got the fix, came up I was clean. It was somebody else that had it and they had my address so it was trying to send it's self to me and everyone else in thier address book.

If I was going to look for a good free one, then go to downloads.com and look at what they have, look at the user ratings. Like on Ebay look at how many have tried it too as well as score.
